Date
Sep. 02, 2021
Duration
28 months

The Hub will generate a core set of learnings based on the experiences of a wide range of NGO and university-based projects, including Corporation grantees, regarding when activities should be in-person, hybrid, or virtual. The project will also engage with the international peace and security community to integrate the study’s findings into their convening designs, and thereby helping to maximize their impact.

Now more than ever, policymakers, education leaders, and the broader public are acknowledging the critical importance of teachers, naming them among the “frontline” workers of the pandemic. Moreover, abundant research shows that teacher quality is one of the important in-school factors in student achievement, and we know that by raising the quality and prestige of the teaching profession, we will positively impact student outcomes. Yet for far too long, education policy has been created largely without the critical voices of classroom teachers at the table. Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence (E4E) is a growing movement of more than 33,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. With continued support from the Corporation, E4E teachers will work with educators to identify the pressing issues impacting their schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to quality education.

Over the last three years, the federal government has advanced a series of anti-immigrant measures and policies. Refugee admittances have been reduced to their lowest rate in American history, new barriers to legal immigration have been raised, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program may be terminated, and 10.5 million undocumented immigrants live in the country without a prospect of legal status. Founded in 1964, the Center for Migration Studies (CMS) is a nonpartisan think tank and educational institution that was incorporated by a community of Catholic priests, nuns, and lay people dedicated to serving migrants and refugees around the world. CMS convenes and provides data-driven analyses and policy recommendations to policymakers, litigators, advocates, and immigrant-serving organizations, including Catholic and other faith groups. With Corporation support, CMS will produce and lift up research and policy ideas that improve U.S. immigration laws and help faith-based organizations better serve immigrant communities.

Approximately, 11.7 million Latino Americans voted in the 2018 midterm elections—a 174 percent increase when compared to the 2014 midterm elections. In 2020, Latinos will be the largest non-white segment of the electorate, making their policy interests and concerns a critical component of a national policy agenda. With an affiliate network of nearly 300 community-based organizations, UnidosUS is one of the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organizations. With Corporation support, UnidosUS will educate its network about issues affecting the Latino community, including those at the intersection of immigration, education, health, and housing. By a two-to-one margin, Americans today believe that immigrants strengthen rather than burden the country. Yet, thousands of asylum-seeking families have been separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, refugee admittances are at their lowest rate in American history, and the federal government has been raising new obstacles to legal immigration without addressing the 10.5 million immigrants living in the country without legal status. America’s Voice Education Fund (AVEF) works with local, state, and national advocacy organizations to disseminate accurate information and unified messaging about immigrants and immigration policy to national, state, and local media. With Corporation support, AVEF will provide immigration advocates with strategic communications and rapid response strategies to educate the public about the harms of partisan rhetoric around immigrants and create public will for pro-immigrant policy changes.

Although they account for less than six percent of the population, Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the United States. Yet, this diverse community continues to experience myriad challenges to participating in the nation’s democratic institutions. Asian Americans have been targeted with racial intimidation at polling sites, deprived language access by government agencies, and isolated from policy conversations that affect their communities. Since 1991, Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC) has been using policy advocacy, litigation, and public education to reduce barriers to the political process and promote policies that expand institutional access. As the 2020 Census approaches, AAJC is also committed to supporting a full and accurate count of the Asian American community, to ensure that they receive a fair share of critical government resources and political representation. With Corporation support, AAJC will work to advance the rights of Asian Americans by amplifying their voice around federal policy issues, promoting legal protections, and ensuring a fair and accurate count of the Asian American community.

America’s talented teachers are uniquely positioned to understand the intersection of student needs, the effects of policy decisions on schools and students, and the importance of connections to parents and to the communities in which students live. They are also trusted by their peers, policymakers and the public. Teacher leaders who are well-informed, persuasive and prepared to lead can become compelling communicators and agents of change for the future of the education system. However, there are not always strong supports built into schools or clear pathways in the teaching profession to enable teachers to play this role. Since its founding in 2009, Teach Plus has set out to engage and elevate teachers to lead change in school, district, state and national education systems and policies. They do this in two ways: (1) organizing and amplifying the knowledge and leadership of teachers who know what works to educate the public and inform policy at all levels; and (2) training and empowering the country’s most talented teachers to lead their peers in implementing these policies effectively and in building the knowledge base of what works in schools. This grant is for general support.

Description
More than fifty million eligible Americans are not registered to vote, due in part to unnecessary barriers enacted by state governments to limit access to the democratic process. These barriers include aggressive voter purges, insufficient language assistance for non-English speakers as prescribed by federal law, and onerous procedures to restoring the rights of Americans with former felony convictions. Since 2000, Demos has been promoting an inclusive voting agenda in states across the country. Through field investigations, lawsuits, and negotiations with government agencies, Demos has helped millions of individuals access critical voter services guaranteed under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. With Corporation support, Demos will work to protect the voting rights of all Americans and expand voting access.
