Description

The Education Trust (Ed Trust), founded in 1996, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to closing opportunity gaps by expanding excellence and equity in education from preschool through college for students of color, students from immigrant families, students with disabilities, justice-impacted students, and those from low-income families from early childhood through college. Through research and advocacy, the organization builds and engages diverse communities that care about education equity to increase the political and public will to act on equity issues. Recognizing that a diverse educator workforce positively impacts all students’ academic and social-emotional outcomes, Ed Trust works with states, districts, and educators to identify ways to increase and retain educators of color in our public school system. With continued support from the Corporation, Ed Trust seeks to forward its mission to close opportunity gaps by developing state and district policy roadmaps to increase the diversity of the educator workforce in at least seven states. Furthermore, Ed Trust will build the capacity of current educators of color to aid in advocating for policy changes that better recruit, support, and retain them.

Project Title

For support of a community of practice for parent leaders

Date

Sep. 12, 2019

Duration

9 months

Description

The Education Trust (Ed Trust), founded in 1996, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to closing opportunity gaps by expanding excellence and equity in education for students of color, students from immigrant families, students with disabilities, justice-impacted students, and those from low-income families from early childhood through college. Through research and advocacy, the organization builds and engages diverse communities that care about education equity, increases political and public will to act on equity issues, and advances strategies that increase college access and completion for historically underserved students. Recognizing that parents are critical partners in closing achievement and opportunity gaps for low-income students and students of color, Ed Trust launched the Ed Trust Family Fellowship with Corporation support in 2018 with an inaugural class of twenty-eight Fellows. The fellowship is designed to equip parent and family advocates with the support and resources they need to improve outcomes for students in their schools and communities. With continued support from the Corporation, Ed Trust will develop a community of practice among fellowship participants to continue to advance their projects further to achieve shared equity priorities; and enable Ed Trust to document lessons learned about engaging parent leaders in policy and advocacy efforts.

Project Title

For support to plan parent equity fellowships and state coalitions

Date

Mar. 08, 2018

Duration

5 months

Description

The responsibility to advance opportunity and achievement for low-income students increasingly rests with states and local communities as well as parents who are actively engaged in advocacy efforts. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) gives states wide latitude in developing accountability, school improvement, and public reporting systems while also requiring plans to incorporate stakeholder engagement. The Education Trust (Ed Trust), a non-profit organization founded in the 1990s and now under the new leadership of former U.S. Secretary of Education John King, plans to harness the power of parent-leaders and state-wide stakeholder coalitions to drive equity-based policies and practices in states and local communities. With support from the Corporation, Ed Trust will pilot its Parent Equity Fellowships and build diverse coalitions in four states (including New York) that will strengthen advocacy efforts and in turn accelerate equitable and high-quality education.

Project Title

For support of the parent equity fellowships and state equity coalitions

Date

Mar. 08, 2018

Duration

14 months

Description

American educational policies and practices have systematically disadvantaged low-income students and students of color by providing inequitable access to high expectations and rigorous coursework, less well-supported teachers and school leaders, as well as less supportive learning environments and extracurricular opportunities. Neglecting to include low-income parents and parents of color at the decision-making table leaves well-intentioned policies and initiatives vulnerable to political influence. The Education Trust (Ed Trust), a national advocacy organization founded in 1992 and dedicated to advancing opportunity and achievement for historically underserved students, proposes to grow the number and efficacy of advocates, specifically parent advocates demanding equitable policies and practices, primarily through a fellowship program and state equity coalitions. With support from the Corporation, Ed Trust plans to develop its advocacy efforts by cultivating a cohort of parent advocates through equity fellowships and integrating these advocates in statewide coalitions comprised of state and local civil rights and social justice advocates, business leaders, and educators, while also supporting state coalitions in facilitating parent participation.

Project Title

For a project to help build the capacity of various education stakeholders to understand the data concerning achievement and opportunity gaps in California

Date

Mar. 03, 2016

Duration

8 months

Description

Public will-building and authentic community engagement are key elements necessary to transform education systems such that they better serve all students; yet, the current education landscape lacks high quality tools to increase public understanding of the data that can drive this change. The Education Trust-West (ETW), a subsidiary of Education Trust, Inc., is a nonprofit working to empower education stakeholders to work towards improved outcomes for all students through building capacity of community-based organizations to be agents of change; sharing policy research and data analysis on the root causes of inequities and best practices for improvement; and engaging with leaders and policymakers to close student achievement gaps. After experiencing success with its Data Equity Walk program—a set of interactive activities designed to help civil rights groups, education advocates, parents, student leaders, and community leaders to understand the data about disparities that exist for students of color, low-income students, and English Language Learners—ETW now seeks to expand their reach by taking the Data Equity Walk on the road and by developing a toolkit that helps organizations conduct their own Data Equity Walks. Corporation funds will support ETW in both of these efforts.

Project Title

For convening and activating a statewide accountability coalition in New York

Date

Sep. 08, 2016

Duration

6 months

Description

The recently passed Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) asks each state to reset their goals and design new accountability systems, thereby offering equity-minded stakeholders in every state a chance to work together to create a system that focuses on quality for all students. The Education Trust–New York — which upon launch in mid-2016 will become The Education Trust’s third state office — plans to work in partnership with a diverse set of stakeholders in New York state, including civil rights, teacher/education, parent/community, and business organizations to leverage this opportunity. This grant supports the convening and activation of a statewide accountability coalition focused on equity. This place-based work is relevant in and of itself – New York serves 2.6 million K-12 students – and because as a bellwether state, New York’s accountability system can serve as a model for others.

Project Title

For advancing educational equity and stakeholder engagement in New York state

Date

Dec. 08, 2016

Duration

12 months

Description

Within New York, as across the country, massive systemic inequities in educational access, opportunity, and performance hold back low-income children and children of color by depriving them of the essential skills that are required for success in the 21st century. As the New York state affiliate of the national Education Trust, the recently launched Education Trust-New York (ETNY) aims to use advocacy—in collaboration with diverse partners—and the promotion of data-centered, student-focused solutions, to mobilize public will, engage key policymakers, advance innovation, and drive the lasting policy and programmatic changes that can raise achievement and opportunity for all of New York’s students. Their strategies include building capacity for data/modeling in partner organizations, convening a statewide coalition, and developing messaging and narratives around key issues.
