The Leadership Academy

Project Title

As a final grant to support curriculum-based professional learning with school leaders

Date

Dec. 12, 2024

Duration

12 months

Description

The Leadership Academy is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that was launched in 2003 to build the capacity of educational leaders, at every level of the system, to confront inequities and create the conditions necessary for all students to thrive. A central problem for schools is that a student’s demographic characteristics continue to be a predictor of their academic achievement, especially as achievement gaps continue to persist for students across races. The Leadership Academy’s mission is to develop, support, and empower school principals and district administrators to become culturally responsive leaders. A part of culturally responsive learning environments requires the need for teaching with high-quality instructional materials supported with curriculum-based professional learning and coaching. Through this final grant, The Leadership Academy will continue to integrate curriculum-based professional learning resources and tools into their culturally responsive leadership approach.

A central problem for schools nationwide is that a student’s demographic characteristics continue to be a predictor of their academic achievement, especially as achievement gaps continue to persist for students across races. For project support of planning and initial district engagement of the Family Engagement Community of Practice

Date

Sep. 15, 2022

Duration

8 months

Description

Although creating true partnerships with families to support student success and socio-emotional development is critical to building equitable education systems, most schools in America have not been designed to promote family-school partnerships. Through this planning grant, The Leadership Academy will partner with Learning Heroes to create a community of practice with three districts to co-design and implement family engagement strategies with their communities. Communities of practice will support leaders in building a vision for how to lead effective engagement strategies. The Leadership Academy and Learning Heroes will also design a suite of services, including professional learning sessions for leaders, walk-through observation cycles, and strategic consulting to districts to determine how central offices can support leaders and teachers in engaging families.

Description

There is currently a shortage of education leaders with the skills, knowledge and beliefs to disrupt racial and economic inequities in order to ensure that each student and educator are part of a system that is intentionally built for them to achieve academic, social, and emotional success. This type of school leadership is the essential lever for transforming schools, especially as these inequities are heightened during the current COVID-19 pandemic. As schools work to continue K-12 instruction through remote learning, New York City Leadership Academy (NYCLA) will develop and support education leaders in the school, system, and state levels, and empower them to transform their leadership in ways that accelerate learning for every student across the system. Through this grant, NYCLA will focus on: a) providing professional learning to partners converting services to remote learning where necessary, b) refining their leadership development, and c) shifting the national conversation towards disrupting inequities brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

For general support and project support to develop and market a flexible learning model to prepare school and district leaders that integrates equity and blended learning experiences

Date

Jun. 01, 2017

Duration

Description

Many of the 15,000 school and district leaders across the United States do not have adequate access to professional development due to financial and human resources constraints. Additionally, many smaller and rural districts lack the number of aspiring principals necessary to support in-house leadership development programs, and their geographic location makes in-person leadership development impractical or cost prohibitive. Online education and regionally-based, multi-district learning experiences can serve as an effective response to these challenges. This grant will support the New York City Leadership Academy (NYCLA) to develop and market its new Flexible Learning Model (e.g., in-person, online, blended learning, access to tools/resources) to meet school and district market needs for personalized leadership development services. NYCLA’s research indicates that the market demand for leadership development is high and supports the diversification of NYCLA’s service portfolio to include leadership development experiences that are varied in terms of pricing, timing, degree of interaction, learning approaches, learning medium, and location.
