Project Title

For core support to the National Committee on North Korea

Date

Jun. 06, 2024

Duration

0 months

Description

North Korea’s expansion of its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles program and rising geopolitical tensions in Northeast Asia make efforts to resume diplomacy between the United States and North Korea both more difficult and vital. Given the high stakes of stability on the Korean Peninsula, there is continued need for a central convening mechanism for stakeholders, experts, and the policy community to facilitate a more effective and holistic U.S. approach to North Korea. Housed at Mercy Corps’ Washington, D.C. offices, the National Committee on North Korea (NCNK) supports principled engagement, when feasible, between the United States and North Korea, provides analysis to inform U.S. policymaking, and facilitates information sharing among nongovernmental specialists, including other Corporation grantees.

Date

Jun. 09, 2022

North Korea’s nuclear weapons program continues to pose major security challenges to the United States and its Northeast Asian allies. While the Biden administration has indicated its willingness to engage with North Korea, there are no details of policy implementation or resumption of negotiations in place. Given the limited channels of communication between the United States and North Korea, there is continued need for a central convening mechanism for North Korea stakeholders, experts, and the policy community. Housed at Mercy Corps’ Washington, D.C. office, the National Committee on North Korea (NCNK) serves this function. Its core work is to support principled engagement between the United States and North Korea, provide informative analysis to inform U.S. policymaking, and facilitate information sharing among nongovernmental specialists. These activities help promote nuanced policy analysis that reduces threat inflation and maintains avenues for diplomatic engagement and humanitarian assistance.

Project Title

As one-time funding for a project on climate migration from the Northern Triangle as part of a Request for Proposals (RFP) on “The Domestic-International Connection”

Date

Sep. 02, 2021

Duration

33 months

Description

The relationship between U.S. immigration, especially from the Northern Triangle countries of Central America, and U.S. foreign policies is a major policymaking issue. However, some of the drivers of this relationship are not well understood. Mercy Corps, in partnership with Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of International Migration, will aim to address these gaps through a study that will examine how climate change relates to migration, how it intersects with poverty and violence, and what is the role of remittances in the region. The study will aim to produce policy recommendations for governments and relevant communities in the United States and in the Northern Triangle.

Jun. 04, 2020

Duration

24 months

Description

North Korea’s nuclear weapons program continues to pose major security challenges to the United States and its Northeast Asian allies.Given the uncertainties surrounding prospects for U.S.-North Korean diplomacy, there is a growing possibility that North Korea will return to a cycle of provocative behavior, creating new tensions that could lead to major conflict. Responding to this challenge, the National Committee on North Korea (NCNK),an independent project of Mercy Corps, will continue to convene organizations and individuals, including other Corporation grantees, promoting peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia, to facilitate information-sharing. As part of this work, it will also produce and disseminate well-informed, balanced analysis of issues related to North Korea, and help cultivate a new generation of North Korea specialists. Additionally, when possible, NCNK will support direct engagement among relevant communities from North Korea, the United States, and Northeast Asia.

Project Title

For facilitating information sharing and nongovernmental U.S. engagement and security dialogues on North Korea

Date

Jun. 14, 2018

Duration

24 months

Description

Whatever the outcome of recent diplomatic developments, North Korea’s nuclear weapons program will continue to present a challenge to the global nonproliferation regime and stability in East Asia. Keeping channels of communication open with North Korea and ensuring that relevant information is shared among U.S. experts on North Korea remain important objectives of the International Peace and Security (IPS) program’s grantmaking. The National Committee on North Korea (NCNK), established in 1999 as a program at Mercy Corps, is a non-partisan coalition of individuals with extensive knowledge of, and experience related to, the society, economy, government, and history of North Korea. NCNK provides a network and convening platform linking multiple people and organizations working directly on North Korea and with North Koreans through non-governmental Track II dialogues, including those organized by other IPS grantees.

Project Title

For project support to facilitate nongovernmental U.S. engagement and security dialogues on North Korea

Date

Jun. 09, 2016

Duration

24 months

Description

North Korea’s nuclear weapons program continues to pose a deep and enduring challenge to the global nonproliferation regime, stability in East Asia, and, directly, to the United States. Despite the increasingly bellicose words and deeds emanating from Pyongyang, including its recent fourth nuclear test, and the impasse on the official diplomatic front, keeping channels of communications open with North Korea remains an important objective of IPS grantmaking as it promotes—similar to its work related to Iran—a non-military solution to a regional crisis where nuclear issues post a threat. A Corporation grant will allow the non-partisan National Committee on North Korea (NCNK) to continue and deepen its work on information sharing and networking among Track II practitioners and other groups working with North Koreans or on North Korea policy.
