Project Title
As a final grant for general support
Date

Duration

Description
Studies have shown that positive childhood engagements, including reading aloud together, singing, sharing stories, and interactions with other children can both improve school readiness and mitigate the risk of developmental delays caused by adverse childhood experiences. Founded in 1989, Reach Out and Read works directly with pediatric medical providers to educate families about the lifelong benefits of reading aloud to their children every day. It now operates in more than 6,100 medical clinics across the country and serves 4.5 million children and their families. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has also developed a telehealth version of its model and has produced a range of additional online resources to supplement its core programming. With Corporation support, Reach Out and Read will reach more parents and caregivers and encourage them to establish routines that support positive parent-child interactions and set a strong foundation for a child’s life.

Description
Founded in 1989, Reach Out and Read was established by a group of medical doctors to improve literacy in young children, particularly those from low-income households. They developed a model of prescribing books and reading aloud as a means of fostering the language-rich interactions between parents and their young, pre-kindergarten children that stimulate early brain development. Reach Out and Read is a cost-effective and scalable, delivering eight million books through a network of almost 6,400 program sites each year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, with Corporation support, Reach Out and Read will continue to keep their health care providers and staff engaged, create a telehealth version of their work, and build out a new online resource library, during a time when actual books cannot be as widely distributed.

Description
Founded in 1989, Reach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and pediatric care providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning in infancy. Reach Out and Read doctors strive to close the achievement gap by empowering parents to use books and reading aloud to create the responsive, language-rich interactions that young children need in order to learn. The Reach Out and Read program currently operates in more than 5,500 hospitals and clinics in all 50 states, reaching 4.5 million families annually. With Corporation support, Reach out and Read will continue to model within the primary health setting, using books and literacy guidance to more fully integrate social-emotional and early brain development into pediatric practice and encourage more reading aloud interactions between children and families across the nation, starting in infancy.
