Description

A postsecondary credential has become increasingly vital to an individual’s ability to secure employment, yet resources to support secondary students’ college access and success are insufficient. iMentor partners with high schools in low-income communities and matches students with mentors who utilize a research-based curriculum to support students on the path to college. iMentor participates in the Corporation’s College Advising Partnership (CAP), which aims to address the persistent gap in degree attainment between high- and low-income students, despite identical aspirations to complete a postsecondary education. Previous grants have enabled iMentor to incorporate socio-emotional learning (SEL) into the model, resulting in 95 percentof mentors reporting greater awareness of SEL and 80 percentof students sharing that their mentors helped them develop SEL knowledge and skills. Corporation support will enable iMentor to continue participating in CAP and transforming college access and success for low-income students through positive mentoring relationships, which have proven even more essential during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Description

iMentor partners with schools in low-income communities and matches students with college-educated mentors who utilize a research-based curriculum to support students on the path to college. The Corporation is supporting iMentor through its College Advising Initiative, which aims to address the persistent gap in degree attainment between high- and low-income students, despite identical aspirations to complete a postsecondary education. A postsecondary credential has become increasingly vital to an individual’s ability to secure employment, yet resources to support postsecondary access and success are insufficient and inequitable. Previous corporation grants have enabled iMentor to incorporate socio-emotional learning into the model and make key programmatic improvements, such as extend the mentoring relationship to the post-secondary level, revise the curriculum, and enhance mentor trainings and assessments. With continued support, iMentor will participate in the College Advising Initiative to strengthen and scale postsecondary advising in New York City and continue to transform college access and success for low-income students through positive mentoring relationships.

Project Title

For incorporating socio-emotional learning into the iMentor program model

Date

Sep. 07, 2017

Duration

24 months

Description

College and career readiness requires more than academic knowledge—an extensive body of research indicates that students’ socio-emotional and metacognitive skills are key to their lifelong well-being. Yet, there remains a dearth of program models that marry socio-emotional learning (SEL) with academic instruction, particularly at the high school level. The iMentor model, which matches every student in a partner school with a committed, college-educated mentor and incorporates direct instruction from iMentor staff, has demonstrated positive impact on its students, who enroll, persist, and graduate from college at higher rates than do low-income students nationwide. Despite these successes, iMentor recognizes that more needs to be done to improve postsecondary outcomes for the students it serves. With Corporation support, iMentor will redesign core elements of its program model to more purposefully target socio-emotional learning such that students are armed with the SEL skills necessary for college persistence and postsecondary success.
