Description
Although securing a postsecondary credential has become increasingly vital to an individual’s ability to secure employment and achieve economic mobility, resources to support college access and success remain insufficient. To address this gap, the Corporation supports a cohort of college access organizations working to meet the varied needs of New York City students. Bottom Line matches high school and college students with highly trained advisors who support students enroll in and persist at “best-fit” colleges. Prior Corporation support enabled Bottom Line New York to support 6,372 students, resulting in nearly 2,500 college graduates. In 2022-2023, Bottom Line New York supported 2,245 students, leading to 96 percent of students committing to attend college, 78 percent of whom selected a more affordable option. Further, 94 percent of college students persisted into their second semester and 87 percent persisted into their third semester. Since Bottom Line New York’s founding, 70 percent of participating students have earned a bachelor’s degree within six years. With renewed support, Bottom Line New York will support 2,000 students annually: 400 high school students through the Access program and 1,600 college students through the Success program.

Founded in 1997, Bottom Line seeks to create a far-reaching ripple effect, launched by the transformative power of a college degree and a mobilizing first career that will uplift individuals, families and entire communities. Bottom Line partners directly with underserved students to fulfill their ambitions to select the right college, earn a Bachelor’s degree, and secure a first job that will launch their careers. Bottom Line has built a proven college-completion and career-readiness model that addresses systemic inequity for educational attainment and economic advancement. Almost 22,000 students strong today, Bottom Line has the opportunity to dramatically increase the number of college graduates throughout the country through local and new site expansion and by leveraging their expertise with the field through the implementation of a strategic plan. Corporation support will help Bottom Line further refine the strategic plan and deploy the necessary project support needed to execute the plan effectively and efficiently.

More so than ever before, a postsecondary credential is a prerequisite for a family-sustaining career. Yet, the gap in degree attainment between high- and low-income students persists. Bottom Line, a college access and success organization with a proven track record of success, has been addressing this gap for over twenty years by connecting low-income students with advisors who support their transition to and through college. With prior Corporation support, 96 percent of Bottom Line New York’s high school students committed to attending college, and 79 percent of college students who entered the program between 2012 and 2016 either graduated or are on track to graduate within six years, which is more than double the national average for Bottom Line’s target population. This renewal grant will enable Bottom Line New York to support nearly 2,900 low-income students on their paths to and through college in the 2018-19 academic year.

Description
Despite increasing high school graduation rates, persistence through college and successful transition to the workforce remain insurmountable obstacles to a majority of students. Bottom Line (BL) is a college access and success organization that provides one-on-one services to help low-income, first-generation students get into and graduate from college. With current Corporation support, Bottom Line New York (BLNY) has increased the number of students it serves by 35 percent in the 2016-2017 academic year, working with 425 high school seniors and 1,735 college students. After the spring 2017 semester, 86 percent of BLNY college students had graduated or were on track to graduate in six years or less. With Corporation support, BLNY will continue to operate its college access and success programs while also expanding its offerings to 1) provide employability supports to students and 2) forge college partnerships that will foster greater college persistence as well as contribute to BLNY’s sustainability.

The transition from high school to college, and persistence through college graduation onto career, remain insurmountable obstacles for a majority of students. Bottom Line helps low-income and first-generation college students get to and through college, providing them with individual support and guidance from senior year of high school through college graduation. In partnership with twenty-one colleges and universities in New York State, Bottom Line New York (BLNY) will serve 1,700 students through its college success program this year, providing holistic support to students in four areas: academic supports, career counseling, college affordability, and life skills. General support from the Corporation will enable BLNY to: guide these students through college to career; deepen and expand its partnership work with colleges; and uncover lessons in college access and success to benefit the field at large.
