Mari Kimura

As a violinist and composer, Mari Kimura is active in both modern classical and improvisational music. Her most distinctive innovation, which she calls “subharmonics,” is a technique of producing pitches up to an octave lower than the violin’s lowest string, a phenomenon that acousticians still find perplexing. Kimura is also known for pioneering interactive computer music which she currently teaches at the Juilliard School. Her innovations, compositions, and performances have won her numerous honors, including the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship in Composition. Updated 2011
