Born in Belarus

One of the most famous contemporary perfumers, Sophia Grojsman, born in Ljubcha, Belarus in 1945, is the creator of many of the world’s most successful fragrances, such as Lancome’s Tresor, Calvin Klein’s Eternity, and Yves Saint Laurent’s Paris. After earning a degree in analytical inorganic chemistry, Grojsman came to the U.S. and joined International Flavors and Fragrances as a lab technician, where she eventually rose to become senior perfumer. Her honors include the Cosmetic Executive Women’s Achiever Award in 1994 and the American Society of Perfumers Living Legend Award in 1996. Updated 2014
