Among the 20th century’s most influential journalists, Max Frankel joined the New York Times as a reporter in 1952, working there for 50 years. After gaining notice as a reporter stationed in Europe, he went to Washington as a diplomat correspondent, eventually becoming bureau chief. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for the stories he produced while accompanying President Nixon on his trip to China. In 1986, he was named executive editor the highest-ranking news position, and served in that position until 1994. Updated 2008
