2026 Great Immigrants
Jane Fraser
Chair and CEO, Citi
Born in Scotland
Born in St. Andrews, Scotland, Jane Fraser moved with her family to Australia during her childhood. She earned a master’s in economics from the University of Cambridge and worked for Goldman Sachs in London and the securities firm Asesores Bursátiles in Madrid, before relocating to the United States to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School.
Fraser joined Citi in 2004, holding a variety of leadership roles, including as head of its Latin American operations. Speaking of her background living and working across the world, she told Bloomberg, “The global mindset is a positive one because it does make you not just think you’ve got a monopoly on the best way of doing things. You do tend to be very curious about how things are being done in other places.”
In 2021, Fraser was named chief executive officer, becoming first woman to head Citi and the first woman to lead a major U.S. bank. Under her leadership, Citi maintains a workforce of over 200,000 employees and does business in more than 180 countries and jurisdictions. Fraser has focused on simplifying, modernizing, and accelerating digital transformation at the company, and has been an advocate for diversity, pay equity, and leadership roles for women in the financial industry. She was named chair of the board in October 2025.
Before Citi, Fraser was a partner at McKinsey & Company. Fraser is currently vice chair for partnership for New York City and a member of the board of dean’s advisors at Harvard Business School, the Stanford Global Advisory Board, the Economic Club of New York, and the Council on Foreign Relations. Among her recognitions, Fraser has been included in Forbes’ World’s Most Powerful Women and Fortune’s Most Powerful Women in Business.
