New York, NY, January 6, 2026 — Carnegie Corporation of New York announced today that Stephen J. Del Rosso, vice president of the International Program, will step down from the philanthropic foundation on March 31, 2026, after a distinguished 27-year career at Carnegie.

A former career diplomat, Del Rosso joined Carnegie in 1999 as a senior program officer in the International Peace and Security Program. He went on to serve in a series of senior positions, most recently, vice president.

“On behalf of the trustees and staff, I would like to express my appreciation to Steve for his myriad contributions to the foundation, his dedication to the mission of advancing peace, and his commitment to our grantees around the world,” said Dame Louise Richardson, president of Carnegie and past head of the University of Oxford. “Our work has greatly benefited from Steve’s deep knowledge of international affairs, as have the many young people he has mentored over the years. His commitment to bridging the gap between theory and practice and to facilitating the emergence of new generations of foreign policy experts have been hallmarks of his work and ensured his influence far beyond Carnegie.”

Throughout his tenure at Carnegie, Del Rosso developed and implemented strategically important work on China, peacebuilding globally and in Africa, bridging the academic–policy gap, Track II diplomacy with Iran and North Korea, and the emerging field of quantum technology and international relations. He also negotiated and implemented the first public-private partnership on peacebuilding with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following a similar partnership with Canada’s International Development Research Centre.

“Throughout my years at Carnegie, I have been keenly aware and appreciative of the great privilege it has been to use the resources of this storied institution to assist an extraordinary range of experts seeking to make the world a better place,” said Del Rosso. “As the world and philanthropy continue to evolve, I am confident that Carnegie will find new ways to make its mark in this changing environment and further our founder’s abiding quest for peace informed by knowledge and understanding.”

Prior to Carnegie, Del Rosso served for a decade as a political officer in the U.S. Foreign Service and held program leadership positions at the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations (now the Chicago Council on Global Affairs) and the Pew Charitable Trusts. Del Rosso holds a PhD in political science from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a BA in English from Tufts University.

Carnegie has initiated a national search. Details are posted on the foundation’s Careers page.
