Steven G. Smith is an award-winning social documentary photographer and cinematographer whose work sheds light on social and environmental concerns. Through innovative cinematic techniques, he creates dynamic, immersive visual narratives that engage and inspire. As a professor at the University of Connecticut, he is committed to mentoring future storytellers and journalists, equipping them with the skills necessary to craft meaningful and impactful narratives. His accolades include a Pulitzer Prize (Breaking News Photography, Photography Staff), multiple Pictures of the Year awards, multiple Best of Photojournalism awards, and international recognition as a cinematographer.

His Andrew Carnegie Fellows project, “We the People: America in the 21st Century,” is a documentary photo essay of America’s evolving identity and the rich variety that defines it. Through compelling imagery, the project highlights our shared humanity. At a time of division, this work serves as a visual dialogue, reminding us that our differences are not barriers but essential elements of our collective identity.
