Bapsi Sidhwa

Bapsi Sidhwa has been described as Pakistan’s finest English-language novelist. She graduated from the Kinnaird College for Women in Lahore and it was there that she began to write novels such as The Crow Eaters and Cracking India based on her experiences as a woman and a religious minority. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1983, she switched her focus to American culture and the immigrant experience starting with the comic novel An American Brat. She has received many honors including the Bunting Fellowship at Radcliffe/Harvard and the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writer’s Award. Sidhwa has served as a professor at several institutions including Columbia University and the University of Houston, and two of her novels have been adapted into films. Updated 2013
