Zearn

Project Title

For a project to support learning recovery guidance for Zearn Math and the Curriculum Study Professional Development

Date

Sep. 10, 2020

Duration

15 months

Description

Research shows that standards-aligned instructional materials have a direct impact on student learning, but also requires teachers who can use the curriculum to effectively deliver differentiated instruction. Zearn Math, the highly rated mathematics curriculum that unites hands-on and digital learning, allows teachers to differentiate instruction through a rotational classroom model. As an open education resource, Zearn Math is offered at no cost to users, with payable options to access extra features such as professional learning supports for educators. Due to COVID-19 related school closures, districts need to prioritize the math content that each child must master to support a successful academic year. Through this grant, Zearn will: a) disseminate their content guidance for math learning recovery to principals, teachers and districts, b) support students to make up for learning loss due to school closures, and c) promote effective use of their Curriculum Study Professional Learning program.

Project Title

For a project to design and test curriculum implementation supports for elementary teachers using a high-quality standards-aligned math curriculum

Date

Sep. 12, 2019

Duration

12 months

Description

A high-quality curriculum alone is not enough to drive improved academic results for students. Effective professional learning and implementation supports are also needed to help teachers learn how to provide differentiated instruction to students. Zearn Math is a highly-rated K-5 mathematics curriculum that is aligned with the Common Core Standards. To support the implementation of the math curriculum, Zearn has designed an online professional learning experience called Curriculum Study. Through this renewal grant, Zearn will increase teacher usage of Zearn Math through a two-fold approach to supporting teachers: (a) One-on-one support for teachers and school leaders, including pre-implementation calls with school and district administrators to support planning before initial use of the curriculum, and (b) tech-based support for teachers and school leaders that leverages a messaging system to increase persistent use of the curriculum in schools and classrooms.

Description

Zearn was founded five years ago to take on the challenge of improving K-8 mathematics in the United States by leveraging the EngageNY open source math curriculum to develop a free digital version based on these instructional materials. Zearn Math is highly rated and has “gone viral” (1.4 million registered users representing approximately 7 percent of the elementary school students in the United States.) Even though Zearn Math has already demonstrated an impact on student learning, in order to maximize impact, Zearn plans to develop online professional learning to support each of the units in the curriculum. Zearn Mission Study will be a digital professional learning offering for elementary teachers to deepen their content knowledge of mathematics and their pedagogical content knowledge of how to teach mathematics by using the Zearn Math curriculum to teach teachers.
