Description
The Yale Humanitarian Research Lab (Yale HRL) is a leader in accessing and analyzing open-source information related to peace and security. Currently, Yale HRL builds bespoke data infrastructure for each crisis it monitors, an approach that is costly, inefficient, and limits data sharing with critical stakeholders. Carnegie funding would enable the Lab to replace this with reusable infrastructure and standardized protocols for tracking displaced populations and automating assessments of key indicators including population movement, food security, building damage, and sanitation conditions. The platform will also establish data sharing agreements with UN agencies, NGOs, media, and others to ensure that analysis reaches decision-makers in real time. Yale HRL brings over two decades of geospatial expertise to this work and has contributed to several humanitarian and accountability outcomes in Sudan and Ukraine, including evidence supporting six ICC indictments.

Description
The Comer School Development Program (SDP), widely recognized as a successful systems approach to educational change, has promoted the importance of involving parents in educational decision-making and practices since 1968. The SDP has a long history of helping parents help change schools so that they support development that enhances the academic and social learning of their children. More recently the SDP developed the Parents, Partners, and Peers program (PPP), a peer-led, conversational approach to increase parents’ knowledge of child development principles to enhance their child-rearing practices. The PPP, a hybrid of the Comer School Development Program principles and the Smart and Secure Children program developed at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, provides a practical application of a developmental approach within a cultural context. This grant provides support for the piloting of an online-only version of the PPP in several New York City schools in collaboration with the United Federation of Teachers.

Description
Academic and policy expertise on Russia and the post-Soviet region is essential to developing effective U.S. approaches towards dealing with Russia. To help build this capacity, the Program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) at Yale University’s MacMillan Center has brought together and institutionalized research, teaching, and public outreach strengths of the university. With continued support, REEES will develop Russian studies and social science courses; hire a research scholar and post-doctoral fellow; host a major international conference on Russia; promote new academic research by providing study and travel grants at the graduate level; and deepen linkages between Yale and Russian institutions by bringing more scholars, students, and professionals from Russia to the United States. The program’s ultimate intent is to nurture an upcoming generation of deeply trained experts on Russia and its neighborhood.

Description
The challenges for U.S. policy and relations with Russia call for strengthening the research and training on Russia and its region. With Corporation support, Yale University’s newly established Program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies will aim to meet this need with a special focus on the social sciences. The Program will facilitate collaborations across the university’s professional schools, create new research and advanced training opportunities, organize international academic conferences, and offer research and travel grants to Russia for graduate students. These and other activities will lay the groundwork for sustained, long-term engagement by Yale in the field of Russian studies.

Description
Research provides strong evidence that development and learning are inextricably linked and that students whose school experiences integrate development and academic learning fare best. The Comer School Development Program (SDP) of the Yale Child Study Center was an early pioneer of this insight, which has gained recognition in recent years with renewed interest in social emotional learning. The SDP launched fifty years ago and has helped more than 1,000 schools in the United States and abroad to integrate child development to improve school outcomes. The Comer model focuses on parent and family engagement; school teams to address organization, management, and student support; and comprehensive school planning. This grant supports a celebration and symposium to mark the program’s 50th anniversary and contribute historical perspective and add momentum to the movement to ground schooling in the science of development.

Description
The study of Russia and the former Soviet Union is at an inflection point in the United States. At the same time, opportunities and resources for training younger regional experts is declining and exposure to the issues posed by the region are diminishing. Yale University’s Project on New Approaches to Russian Studies seeks to contribute to the field of Russian studies with new analysis, scholarship, and methodologies that draw on a range of fields in the humanities and social sciences. With renewed funding, the project will develop more robust programming and opportunities for Yale students, faculty, and scholars on the campus and in Russia; encourage academic exchanges with Russia; and reinforce the institutional foundation for the long-term sustainability of Russian studies at the university.
