Welcoming America

Project Title

For support of a project to reshape the narrative about immigrants in new destination states

Date

Dec. 11, 2025

Duration

24 months

Description

Since 2009, Welcoming America has supported communities in building inclusive environments where newcomers and longtime residents can thrive. Amid polarization and disinformation, its new initiative, Rooted & Resilient: Building and Amplifying Narratives of Welcoming, will equip local leaders—especially in rural and politically diverse areas—to strengthen inclusion by telling stories of belonging, resilience, and civic participation. Through a multimedia campaign expected to reach more than 150,000 people, its annual narrative training labs, and its 2026 State of Welcoming Report, the project will broaden understanding of how diverse communities can succeed together. Building on its 300-member network serving 38 million people, Welcoming America will help these communities not only participate in national conversations but also drive the narrative.

Project Title

For a project to engage rural communities in an immigrant inclusion campaign

Date

Jun. 03, 2021

Duration

24 months

Description

Communities across the United States are grappling with rising anti-immigrant sentiment, systemic inequalities, and the country’s history of exclusion, othering, and oppression. According to research by the Washington Post and Kaiser Family Foundation, “attitudes toward immigrants form one of the widest gulfs between U.S. cities and rural communities.” In fact, climate change, and other factors, are leading to rising migration, and too often, receiving communities perceive immigration as a zero-sum game. Rural and small communities in particular have been targeted with messaging that perpetuates this narrative. Founded in 2009, Welcoming America is a national, grassroots-driven collaborative that builds mutual respect and collaboration between immigrants and their U.S.-born neighbors. With Corporation support, Welcoming America will build on its newly launched Rural Welcoming Begins With Us project to actively engage fifteen rural communities, build new welcoming infrastructure in the form of policies and programs in ten rural communities, and train twenty-five rural leaders to engage in local and national immigrant inclusion efforts.

Project Title

As a final grant for general support

Date

Dec. 06, 2018

Duration

12 months

Description

Over the past twenty years, immigrants have been settling in suburbs, rural towns, and cities without recent histories of receiving immigrants. However, the current political environment around immigration has made evident the anxieties that Americans may feel about cultural and demographic shifts. This has resulted in tensions that leave both newcomers and native residents feeling isolated. Founded in 2009, Welcoming America is a national, grassroots-driven collaborative that builds mutual respect and collaboration between immigrants and their U.S.-born neighbors. Working with approximately 200 municipal governments and nonprofits in nearly 500 communities nationwide, Welcoming America is promoting policies and practices that build bridges across cultures and ideological spectrums, and address systemic barriers to integration for immigrants. With Corporation support, Welcoming America will continue to work with its network of partners and member communities to help immigrants and native-born residents find common ground and shared prosperity.

Description

Over the past twenty years, immigrants have begun to settle in suburbs, rural towns, and cities that have no tradition of receiving immigrants. The sudden arrival of newcomers—often from cultures the native residents have no experience with and speaking languages they have never heard—can lead to a tense atmosphere that leaves both newcomers and native residents isolated. While many immigrant advocates focus on building the infrastructure to help support immigrants in these new gateways, few focus on developing the relationship between immigrants and their U.S.-born neighbors. Established in 2009, Welcoming America is a national, grassroots-driven collaborative that builds mutual respect and cooperation between the foreign-born and U.S.-born, creating the conditions for long-term integration. With renewed Corporation support, Welcoming America will work with its countrywide network of member organizations and partners to promote a welcoming atmosphere—community by community—in which immigrants and native-born residents can find common ground and shared prosperity.
