Project Title

For a final grant for the Good Authority blog

Date

Dec. 12, 2024

Duration

24 months

Description

Good Authority is the new iteration of “The Monkey Cage” blog that was previously linked with the Washington Post. During its seven-year affiliation with the newspaper, it became an important intermediary between international affairs scholars and the broader public, encouraging a more publicly focused political science discipline and political discourse informed by sound research. Since September 2023, Good Authority has built on this legacy by continuing to edit and publish scholarly work that is readable and comprehensible to non-specialists. Renewed funding will assist the project in pursuing further growth and sustainability, thus maintaining Global Authority’s role as a resource for policymakers, scholars, and the global public interested in the complexities of international politics.

Project Title

For support of international politics coverage at The Monkey Cage

Date

Duration

24 months

Description

Although academics have deep insights into international events and issues, they often find it hard to share their expertise with a broader audience. Conventional venues for academic publishing are largely inaccessible to this audience. Over the last 15 years, The Monkey Cage (TMC) has become a crucial intermediary between international affairs scholars and the broader public, helping to create a more publicly focused political science discipline and making America’s political conversation more informed by sound research. With the Washington Post as its platform to bridge the worlds of scholarly and public debate, TMC edits the work of scholars to make it readable and comprehensible to non-specialists. Continued corporation support will allow TMC to strengthen its coverage of international politics in two ways. First, it will help provide full-time editorial support to scholars with knowledge of international relations, national security, foreign policy, and the politics of various regions of the world. Second, it will enable TMC to establish new channels of communication to disseminate and promote its international politics coverage, as well as measure the impact of that communication with policy-relevant audiences.

For strengthening international politics coverage at The Monkey Cage

Duration

Description

The number and scope of international challenges facing policymakers seem to be increasing exponentially. However, policymakers and the attentive public rarely have the time or patience to engage with rigorously researched academic writing. Yet, academic research contains important insights that can support evidence-based policymaking and broader public understanding of the world. To address this gap, The Monkey Cage, an independent, on-line site hosted by The Washington Post, aims to continue connecting political science scholarship on important international developments with policy and public audiences in a concise and intelligible form. With Corporation support, The Monkey Cage will promote publicly-oriented scholars, build an informed audience, and expand its international politics coverage.
