Date

Duration
15 months
Description
Since 1997, Urban Assembly (UA) has supported New York City schools with the mission to advance students’ economic and social mobility by improving public education through supporting schools develop best practices to improve students’ postsecondary readiness, college and career success, and social and emotional skills. UA schools directly serve 9,000 students annually, a majority of whom are Black or Latina (83 percent) and come from low-income households (83 percent), that consistently outperform other NYC schools and reached 25,000 students in NYC outside of their network and 65,000 students nationwide through partnerships. Prior Corporation support allowed UA to support schools and school districts around the country integrate the Resilient Scholar Program (RSP) model to build students’ confidence and self-awareness while promoting general social competence by helping students develop the skills to reason through a wide variety of social and emotional situations. Renewed support will enable UA to support forty-eight schools and 500 My Brother’s Keeper chapters to reach approximately 150,000 students and support 2,432 educators. UA will also expand the RSP portal to incorporate AI and support the restoration of pre-pandemic levels of implementation.

Project Title
For support of the Resilient Scholars Program, an evidence-based socio-emotional learning model for high school students
Date
Sep. 14, 2023
Duration
24 months
Description
A central element of transforming the student experience is to integrate social and emotional development into academic learning. While the literature indicates a relationship between socio-emotional learning (SEL) and key student outcomes, SEL is too often treated as an add-on rather than as a central component of the learning experience. The Urban Assembly (UA) is a school support network that operates two dozen secondary schools in New York City and partners with schools and districts across the country. To prepare students to succeed in college and career, UA prioritizes the social and emotional development of its students through an evidence-based program they developed within their network of schools called the Resilient Scholars Program (RSP). Created with Corporation support, RSP integrates SEL into all aspects of the student experience through an advisory-based model. Continued support will enable UA to expand implementation of RSP through district partnerships in strategic locations, develop additional tools and resources for educators, and advance the national dialogue around SEL through convenings and dissemination.

Description
While the literature indicates a positive relationship between socio-emotional learning (SEL) and long-term life outcomes, SEL is too often treated as an add-on to academic instruction rather than as a central component of the learning experience, particularly at the high school level. The Urban Assembly (UA), a network of twenty-three public middle and high schools in New York City, created the Resilient Scholars Program (RSP) to ensure comprehensive implementation of SEL across a diversity of school contexts. With Corporation support, the UA has embedded RSP into fourteen of its schools as well as launched partnerships with four additional New York City schools and several districts across the country to spread RSP beyond the reach of its network. With continued Corporation support, the UA will strengthen the implementation, assessment, and sustainability of RSP in schools and districts, galvanize support for high-quality SEL among system and school leaders, and foster coalitions across school systems and community-based organizations to increase the coherence of SEL implementation across learning settings.

Description
While the literature indicates a positive relationship between socio-emotional learning (SEL) and long-term life outcomes, there remains a dearth of program models and readily available tools that enable educators to marry SEL with academic instruction, particularly at the high school level. The Urban Assembly (UA), a network of twenty-two public middle and high schools in New York City, created the Resilient Scholars Program (RSP) to ensure consistent implementation of socio-emotional programing across a diversity of school contexts. With Corporation support, the UA has embedded RSP into fourteen of its schools as well as launched partnerships with four additional New York City schools and five Los Angeles schools to spread RSP beyond the reach of its network. With continued Corporation support, the UA will strengthen the implementation, assessment, and sustainability of RSP in its schools, cultivate a model for RSP adoption in several new districts, and utilize its schools as demonstration sites to share best practices in SEL across the country.

Description
College and career readiness requires more than academic knowledge—an extensive body of research indicates that students’ socio-emotional and metacognitive skills are key to their lifelong well-being. Yet, there remains a dearth of program models that marry socio-emotional learning (SEL) with academic instruction, particularly at the high school level. The Urban Assembly (UA), operating in New York City for over fifteen years and currently serving over 9,000 students, has had consistent success in sending high numbers of low-income students to college. In recognition of that fact that college persistence requires more than academic preparation, UA created the Resilient Scholars (RS) program, an evidence-based model for implementing socio-emotional learning. With Corporation support, the RS program was adopted by nine high schools, with promising early indicators of success. Now, UA will complete expansion of the RS program across the UA network in New York City and pilot the program in Los Angeles, determining program efficacy in diverse contexts.

For a project to enable socio-emotional learning through the Urban Assembly Resilient Scholar Program
Date

Duration

Description
In order to be prepared for success in the 21st century economy, students require more than the successful acquisition of content knowledge and skills. Equal attention must be paid to students’ cognitive and socio-emotional growth, which is critical to young people’s success in school, the workplace, and life. The Urban Assembly (UA) runs a network of 21 high-performing public high schools in low-income communities in New York City. UA’s Resilient Scholars Program (RSP) is an evidence-based, replicable, and sustainable model for implementing socio-emotional learning (SEL) in an urban high school environment. With Corporation support, UA will build off of the success of its pilot year to undertake two primary strands of work: 1) Continue implementation of RSP in two of the pilot schools, and expand RSP to nine UA schools; and 2) Develop the UA Office of SEL to provide direct support to schools and disseminate lessons learned.
