Description
Low-income students continue to face persistent pandemic-related academic gaps, with traditional tutoring programs costing thousands of dollars per student and pandemic recovery funding largely expired. Founded in 2016, UPchieve is an edtech nonprofit that connects middle and high school students across the country with trained volunteers for free, 24/7 online tutoring in 35 subjects and college counseling. To date, UPchieve volunteers have answered more than 350,000 tutoring requests from more than 50,000 students, and a Mathematica randomized controlled trial found that students who completed 10 or more sessions enrolled in four-year colleges at a rate of 72 percent. With support from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, UPchieve will expand its team, launch fully sponsored partnerships with 10 low-income schools, and grow the National Tutoring Honor Society (NTHS), with the goal of reaching more than 40,000 students annually by 2027.
