Grants

University of Wisconsin, Madison

Project Title

For one time funding for a project to develop an integrated, open-access model that simulates the full spectrum of the consequences of nuclear conflict as part of a Request for Proposals for the Consortium to Reduce Nuclear Dangers

Date

Dec. 11, 2025

Duration

24 months

Description

For the first time since the 1980s, the United Nations General Assembly has mandated a new scientific study assessing the effects of nuclear conflict. However, the UN Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War will rely on outside expertise to produce its results. While past studies have examined discrete elements of nuclear war effects, there is no integrated framework capable of simulating the full range of immediate and long-term impacts—from blast, fire, and fallout to disruptions of climate, agriculture, the global economy, and space infrastructure. To address this major gap in understanding nuclear dangers, the University of Wisconsin–Madison will develop a new open-access modeling capability that integrates nuclear weapons effects with macroeconomic, agricultural, and earth system models, and will produce a novel first-order model of nuclear detonations in space to assess risks to satellites and related infrastructure.

Project Title

As a final grant for expanding and enriching the study of Russia

Date

Sep. 15, 2022

Duration

33 months

Description

The invasion of Ukraine has jeopardized the future of academic exchanges between the United States and Russia, especially among those working in the social science disciplines. This risk comes at a time when U.S. policymakers will need a nuanced, informed, and textured understanding of contemporary Russia. The University of Wisconsin, Madison, is among the Corporation-supported institutions that have been working since 2016 to deepen U.S. expertise on Russia while exposing Russian academics to American thinking. In a final phase, its Wisconsin Russia Project (WRP) will support academic positions; expand social science graduate student fellowships; and help create a consortium to find positions for displaced Russian social scientists across multiple American public universities.

Description

The University of Wisconsin, Madison, is among the Corporation-supported institutions that aim to deepen U.S. expertise on Russia while also exposing Russian academics to American thinking. Continued support will allow the project to increase its program participants; establish closer connections with other universities with similar programs; and document its impact by creating a website focused on social scientist collaboration in the field of Russia studies.

Project Title

For expanding and enriching the study of Russia

Date

Sep. 13, 2018

Duration

24 months

Description

The importance of U.S.-Russia relations suggests the need for a comprehensive understanding of Russian domestic and foreign policies within the United States. Likewise, there is a need for better understanding of the United States in Russia. Universities and academic institutions with relevant programs play an important role in building up expert capacity. The Wisconsin Russia Project at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (UW) is among the Corporation-supported institutions that aim to deepen the U.S. expertise on Russia while also exposing the Russian academics to American thinking. With continued support, the UW will focus on improving social science research and PhD-level training on Russia by establishing research assistant positions and doctoral fellowships, facilitating PhD-level academic exchanges, promoting faculty initiatives, and hosting a Young Scholars Conference. Some of the activities will result in publications.

Project Title

For research on the impact of social networks on the political participation of youth

Date

Dec. 08, 2016

Duration

24 months

Description

The growing prevalence of social media has had a profound impact on American journalism and politics, one that cannot yet be fully understood. For youth, who are more reliant on social media, the effect is even more exaggerated. Following websites, social networking applications are the primary source of news for young adults. Because social networks often consist of like-minded friends, family-members, and colleagues, the news stories encountered on these networks are often homogeneous and reinforcing of existing attitudes. With Corporation support, researchers at the University of Wisconsin will study how such polarized and personalized media consumption is influencing young voters’ engagement in the political system.

Project Title

For expanding and enriching the study of Russia in the social sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Madison

Date

Sep. 08, 2016

Duration

24 months

Description

To advance long-term relations between the United States and Russia and improve knowledge about Russian society in the United States, the Corporation launched an initiative to strengthen the study of Russia and nurture informed and deeply grounded Russia experts at select U.S. universities. This grant will allow the University of Wisconsin, Madison (UWM) to serve as a hub for Ph.D. training in Russian studies and foster collaboration between U.S. and Russia-based scholars. UWM has a strong base of social science faculty whose research features a deep and broad engagement with Russia. By bringing together scholars at difference stages of their careers, and with different backgrounds, it will create extensive, professional networks of faculty, and connect UWM and Ph.D. students and their equivalents in Russia to collaborate across disciplinary and methodological lines.

Project Title

For a joint project with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the role of women in peacebuilding in Africa

Date

Jun. 09, 2016

Duration

48 months

Description

Much of the research on women and conflict has been done in the field of feminist international relations and has usefully critiqued some of key concepts defining the way people think about war and conflict. However, with some important exceptions, the empirical base of this literature has been weak, particularly in understanding grassroots impacts and responses to conflict. This proposed consortium project seeks to address this gap by focusing on the gendered nature of peacebuilding: 1) how the lack of incorporation of women into formal peace processes and post conflict governance have hindered peace; 2) how women have been engaged in unrecognized forms of peacebuilding informally in Africa and their contributions and limitations; and 3) how the struggle for women’s rights and legal reform is a key battleground internally in African societies struggling to confront conservative Islamist and Salafist influences.
