Description

Applied academic research presents opportunities for improving policy debates and decision-making. The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington (Jackson School) connects cutting-edge research on imminent global concerns with outreach to the public, expert community, and decisionmakers. With Corporation support, the Jackson School will continue the development of inter-disciplinary research on pressing topics to international peace and security through its Global Research Groups. The groups connect researchers and practitioners, provide students with applied research tools, and create inter-disciplinary faculty connections. Ongoing Global Research Groups focus on cybersecurity and the Arctic.

Description

Families are provided with various types of school level information about student achievement, but the information they receive typically comes with little context and can be confusing. In order to support their children’s future trajectory, families need to be able to understand what’s being communicated and what it suggests. Researchers at the Center for Education Data & Research (CEDR) at the University of Washington have extensive experience analyzing school datasets and using them to assess student outcomes, as well as to predict college readiness and success. With support from the Corporation, CEDR will analyze student achievement data, develop a user-friendly interface to convey information, pilot various formats for communicating to families, and roll out the pilot to a larger group of families in preparation for a randomized control trial. Through their research study and pilot, this project will help families in the short- and medium-terms to support their children’s achievement and make their success in college more likely.

The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington (Jackson School) is one of the leading members of the U.S.-based American Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). With Corporation support, the Jackson School will create an internal think tank, the International Policy Institute (the Institute), to facilitate stronger relationships between the University of Washington’s international studies scholars and the practitioner community, with a particular focus on cybersecurity, the Arctic, and religion. The think tank will allow the Jackson School to formalize and institutionalize the new models of research, collaboration, teaching, and dissemination that it developed through the Institute during its initial phase.

Description

Over the last twenty-five years, The Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) at the University of Washington has provided thought leadership and direct support for city-based school reform through their approach to creating a system of autonomous and accountable schools, known as a portfolio strategy. While their portfolio strategy has taken hold in dozens of cities, resulting in greater diversity in schooling options and providers for families, scaling this work will require a ‘next generation’ version of the portfolio strategy that reflects the complex needs of today’s public-school system. With Corporation support, CRPE will 1) Commission a series of papers on critical topics, published as the Roadmap for the Future of Public Education, that will serve as the platform for their renewed research agenda and 2) Host a convening to launch their new strategy that brings together thought leaders from across the sector to spur action in the community, moving forward their new body of work.

An emerging evidence base suggests that personalized and mastery-based learning experiences are beneficial to long-term student success, and many individual school and program models have emerged that incorporate these design principles. However, despite the existence of strong school models, more must be done to explore the system-level shifts and policies necessary to ensure personalization for all students. Over the last twenty-five years, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) at the University of Washington has been at the forefront of school system redesign, providing both thought leadership and academic research to support cities doing the challenging work of transforming their education systems. Building upon their expertise in this area, CRPE is embarking on a new chapter focused on building schools and school systems where policies, resources, and school options are aligned to ensure personalized student support. With Corporation support, CRPE will 1) Convene a network of best-in-class state and district leaders to develop systems-level strategies for making the shift toward student-level personalization and 2) Build the evidence base for issues relevant to personalization and system redesign.

To achieve and sustain meaningful scale of student-centered learning environments, major shifts in the systems that support schools are required. Too many cities remain stuck with an outdated compliance-oriented education system. Now, district leaders across the country are adopting a new “portfolio” strategy to transform K-12 public education into a system of autonomous and accountable schools. Despite fast-growing support, implementation of this strategy is a major challenge. The Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) at the University of Washington provides thought leadership and direct support to cities transforming their education systems to better serve all students through a portfolio strategy. The proposed grant will enable CRPE to deepen this work by 1) supporting and expanding the network of cities implementing a portfolio strategy; 2) capturing learning from, and assessing the progress of, network members and sharing the results broadly; and 3) providing targeted technical support to high-potential systems implementing a portfolio strategy.
