University of California, Berkeley

Project Title

For core support for the University of California, Berkeley Risk and Security Laboratory

Date

Sep. 11, 2025

Duration

24 months

Description

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, space systems, and advanced materials are reshaping the future of nuclear security, yet few institutions are equipped to study how these developments interact and how policy can adapt. The Berkeley Risk and Security Lab at the University of California, Berkeley was founded to fill this gap by combining rigorous research, wargaming, and policy engagement to inform future nuclear security strategies. With Carnegie’s support, the Lab will establish the Carnegie Nuclear Security Initiative to deepen research on key nuclear security topics while expanding training for the next generation of nuclear security experts. This initiative will produce practical analysis and convene multidisciplinary stakeholders to advance new approaches to managing nuclear risks in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Project Title

For a one-time project on security programs in disordered states as part of a Request for Proposals on Understanding the Forces Shaping the Global Order

Date

Sep. 12, 2024

Duration

24 months

Description

Newly emergent multi-actor security networks have reshaped the role of domestic actors in maintaining global stability. Through this project, an international team of researchers at the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at the University of California, Berkeley, will analyze the partnerships between security providers and takers, and their effect on the international order. The project will produce a framework for understanding these security networks and test this model in West Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. By producing research and providing fora for engagement, the project will also seek to establish a global community examining the evolution of these networks.

Project Title

For a project to develop and field-test open source end-of-unit summative assessments that align with middle school performance expectations in the Next Generation Science Standards

Date

Mar. 05, 2020

Duration

72 months

Description

With forty-four states and the District of Columbia having adopted new science standards, there are critical resources needed to support teachers, schools, and districts as they work toward implementing high-quality science instructional materials in classrooms. Building on the 20 years of experience in curriculum development, the Lawrence Hall of Science will develop and field test a comprehensive suite of benchmark end-of-unit summative assessments to align with all fifty-nine middle school performance expectations of the Next Generation Science Standards. Through this renewal grant, they will: (a) complete work from their Phase I work to test, externally review, and revise item sets for thirty performance expectations; (b) develop, review, and test assessments for the remaining twenty-nine performance expectations; (c) obtain a summative external review of assessments; (d) develop implementation support materials for teachers to use the assessments; and (e) widely disseminate the assessment items to the field.

Project Title

For a pilot study on data collection in conflict-affected countries

Date

Jun. 14, 2018

Duration

58 months

Description

The scarcity of qualitative and quantitative data owned and collected by Africans with African-led methods contributes to major inequalities in knowledge production informing peacebuilding research in Africa. In response to a request for proposals, the Centre de Recherché et D’Action Pour la Paix (CERAP) and the University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley) will compare low-cost data collection methodologies in Cote d’Ivoire to analyze their effectiveness in generating specific forms of data on violent events. CERAP and Berkeley will conduct this pilot project to better capture a range of dynamics during violence, such as what forms it takes, where it occurs, and who is targeted. In addition, CERAP will conduct a peacebuilding program to train local leaders in conflict prevention strategies.

Project Title

For a Lawrence Hall of Science project to develop and field-test a suite of open source end-of-unit summative assessments that align with middle school performance expectations in the Next Generation Science Standards

Date

Dec. 07, 2017

Duration

33 months

Description

This project builds on twenty years of experience by the University of California, Berkeley, Lawrence Hall of Science team to develop, test, evaluate, and disseminate a classroom-based science assessment system, and also a recent National Science Foundation funded project to develop curriculum and assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The primary objectives of this proposal are to develop and test a complete set of model three-dimensional assessments and scoring rubrics that support the middle school earth, life, physical science, and engineering performance expectations in order to support implementation of the NGSS that can be used across schools or districts to monitor student performance. In addition to providing model assessments for the NGSS performance objectives across content areas, the project will make progress toward identifying indicators of high-quality three-dimensional assessments and the principles for identifying and scoring these assessments. By distilling these indicators and principles, the project will also be able to offer guidance to teachers and others on how to modify the assessments while still maintaining their quality.

Project Title

For a conference entitled "The New Nationalism and Universities: Global Perspectives on Politics and Policy and the Future of Higher Education"

Date

Sep. 07, 2017

Duration

47 months

Description

A grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York helped establish the Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE)–the first academic research center in the the world devoted to the study of higher education–at the University of California, Berkeley sixty years ago. Since that time, CSHE has served an important role providing a comparative perspective on higher education across the globe. To mark its 60th anniversary and with Corporation support, this year CSHE will host an international conference that will explore how rising nationalism in many parts of the world is impacting policy and politics related to higher education. The conference will include the commissioning of several papers for possible publication in a single volume.

Project Title

For a project on the implications of nuclear weapons with alternate effects regimes or low yields on global nuclear stability

Date

Sep. 07, 2017

Duration

30 months

Description

In the future, it may be possible for states to construct nuclear weapons with alternative effects regimes that are optimized for specific military purposes. Such weapons could lower the nuclear threshold by providing new military applications or by reducing negative repercussions of nuclear use. This project, a collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley and Sandia National Laboratory, will assess these potential developments through simulations and analysis. The project will engage young and experienced scholars as well as decision makers, and will create a data set to test existing and new theories.
