Project Title

For a project to build capacity for and develop a science pathway for their Standards Institute

Date

Jun. 09, 2022

Duration

6 months

Description

High-quality professional learning must be grounded in the intersection of standards, content, aligned curriculum, and equity, and is essential for closing the opportunity gap caused by systemic bias and racism. UnboundEd envisions a world in which educators actively work together to dismantle systemic racism by providing grade-level, engaging, affirming, and meaningful instruction. Since its inception, their Standards Institute has offered pathways for math educators, English Language Arts educators, and leaders centered on these components. They are now ready to embark on the creation of a new pathway for science educators and play a role in helping science teachers make the shifts the Next Generation Science Standards require and that high-quality instructional materials, like OpenSciEd, enable. As with other pathways, this experience will be the professional development educators need to accelerate students to grade level and beyond, enabling all students to thrive in school and in life. Through this work, UnboundEd will a) build the design of the science pathway and associated outcomes, objectives, content, and measures, b) consult with experts in the field, and c) include the science pathway in their marketing materials for Winter 2023 Standards Institute.

Project Title

For a project to design and pilot a district-based professional learning program and facilitator credentialing program based on the Standards Institute

Date

Sep. 15, 2022

Duration

18 months

Description

The adoption of college- and career-ready standards is one of the most important changes in U.S. education policy in recent decades. However, teachers and school leaders lack deep knowledge of these standards and high-quality instructional materials designed to support standards-based instruction. UnboundEd currently provides immersive, standards-aligned professional learning opportunities through their week-long Standards Institutes for teachers and instructional leaders focused on ELA and mathematics. They are now ready to scale these types of professional learning opportunities at the local level and expand the Standards Institute to include science education. Through this project, UnboundEd will complete their facilitator credentialing program and develop a Science Pathway for the Standards Institute.

Project Title

For a project to design and pilot a district-based professional learning program and facilitator credentialing program based on the Standards Institute

Date

Jun. 04, 2020

Duration

21 months

Description

The adoption and implementation of college and career-ready state standards focuses on improving outcomes for all students. Educators need resources to translate standards-aligned curricula into effective and rigorous classroom practices, while also confronting biased beliefs about how to implement equitable instruction. UnboundEd addresses this need by building teachers’ abilities and skills to plan and adapt grade-level, affirming, and meaningful lessons through their triannual Standards Institute. Through this renewal grant, UnboundEd will meet systems’ demand for high-quality professional learning programs at the district level by: designing, developing, piloting, and refining a (a) local professional development program for teachers and (b) facilitator credentialing program; as well as (c) improving and scaling the professional learning and facilitator credentialing programs.

Project Title

For a project to expand the Standards Institute focused on improving local capacity to implement standards aligned instruction and increase access to high-quality open education resources

Date

Dec. 06, 2018

Duration

18 months

Description

There is a persistent gap between low-income, minority student’s academic outcomes and their counterparts which is often referred to as the “achievement gap,” but UnboundEd sees this as a “provision gap” based on the opportunity to learn what adults provide students. Therefore, to remedy this gap educator’s biased beliefs about student’s abilities and a lack of pedagogical content knowledge must be addressed. UnboundEd does this through open education resources designed to accelerate students to grade-level work and by providing content-aligned, bias-free resources and professional learning programs for teachers and school leaders. Through this grant, UnboundEd will 1) enhance the Standards Institute program and expand two newly launched programs focused on chief academic officers and facilitators of professional learning in districts (equity influencers), 2) invest in marketing and communications to scale these programs, and 3) implement a Learning Management System for their programs.

Project Title

For a project to increase access to digital open education resources (OER) and curriculum, expand Standards Institutes focused on implementation of OER curriculum, and improve local capacity through the development of leaders of professional learning

Date

Dec. 07, 2017

Duration

12 months

Description

UnboundEd’s work is focused on overcoming the many challenges to effective implementation of more rigorous standards. Specifically, they are working to address the challenges related to the fact that current curriculum, tools, resources, and professional development do not enable educators to effectively meet the needs and rigorous standards for all students, especially students of color and below grade level students. Through this project they will develop and provide digitized open education resources (OER) curriculum and supports designed to allow teachers to effectively adapt customizable, high quality OER materials to meet the needs of all students while upholding the rigor of the Common Core and helping educators deliver equitable instruction. Additionally, they will expand their Standards Institute to support the effective implementation of the Common Core standards and aligned, equitable instruction. They will also prepare a cohort of educators to facilitate this work in school districts.

Project Title

For improving training and support for teachers and school leaders to implement Common Core State Standards

Date

Dec. 08, 2016

Duration

12 months

Description

Founded in 2015, UnboundEd focuses on empowering teachers and ensuring the successful implementation of higher standards through three channels: 1) the provision of free, high-quality standards-aligned resources for the classroom; 2) the Standards Institute, which provides participants with an immersive professional development experience aimed at learning the standards; and 3) partnerships with organizations working with districts and charter networks nationwide to train teachers to update their instructional practice to implement the standards. Through this grant, UnboundEd will build on the work of its current Corporation grant to strengthen and expand the Standards Institute. UnboundEd will create online open educational resources (OER) that give teachers lesson plans that they can adapt to meet the needs of students, and deepen and expand strategic alliances with partners positioned to provide district and school-based support for the implementation of high quality materials.

Description

Many schools and districts continue to struggle to adapt instruction to new higher standards. One of the major reasons is the lack of curricular resources that are truly aligned to the standards. UnboundEd, a new organization that was incubated with Corporation support is dedicated to empowering teachers by providing free, high-quality standards-aligned resources for the classroom, the opportunity for immersive training through professional development institutes, and the option of support through website offerings to close the student achievement gap. With continued Corporation support, UnboundEd will continue to offer Standards based Institutes for educators from across the nation to attend multi-day, intensive, transformative learning experiences designed to empower them to have a greater voice in the local and national discourse on the new standards as well as build, improve, and sustain instructional excellence in their particular grade.
