Project Title

For the Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship to support women in nonproliferation

Date

Sep. 14, 2023

Duration

27 months

Description

Despite evidence showing their positive impacts on peace and security, women are underrepresented in the nuclear security and nonproliferation arenas. For the past decade, the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) has sought to increase women’s presence and participation in this critical field through the Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship. The fellowship provides opportunities for women leaders to deepen their subject matter expertise, enhance their professional skillset, and build a robust international network. With this renewal, CRDF will continue to support a regional cohort of women from key countries, empowering participants to serve as nonproliferation champions at home and abroad.

Description

The representation of women in the international security field demonstrates a large gender gap. To help narrow that gap, the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) focuses on women in key countries. Through its Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship, CRDF provides opportunities to emerging female experts on nuclear security to advance their careers through study and professional networks. With Corporation support, CRDF will continue the regional fellowships that contribute to promoting gender diversity in the nonproliferation field and in international security more broadly.

For the Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship to support women in nonproliferation

Date

Dec. 05, 2019

Duration

24 months

Description

While research shows that improving gender parity leads to greater peace and security, women remain underrepresented in the fields of nuclear security and nonproliferation. The Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship seeks to address that gap by providing women in emerging countries the opportunity to participate in a multi-faceted, year-long security fellowship. The fellowship enables the participants to gain greater knowledge of nuclear security policy, build a professional network, and connect with other women in the field. This grant will support the 2020 and 2021 fellows, each of whom will spend a semester at a U.S. university; complete a three-month internship at a leading Washington, D.C. nonproliferation institution; and carry out a capstone project. To strengthen connections among past fellows, the grant will also support the participation of alumnae in panel presentations on the margins of major international nuclear conferences. The program’s ultimate goal is to provide the tools, resources, and training necessary for fellows to take on further leadership roles in their home countries.

While research shows that improving gender parity leads to greater peace and security, women remain underrepresented in the fields of nuclear security and nonproliferation. The Robin Memorial Copeland Fellowship seeks to address that gap by providing women in emerging countries–particularly those with technical backgrounds–the opportunity to participate in a multi-faceted, year-long security fellowship. The fellowships enable the participants to gain greater knowledge of nuclear security policy, build a professional network, and connect with other women in the field. This grant will support the 2019 fellow, who will spend a semester at a U.S. university; complete a three-month internship at a leading Washington, D.C. nonproliferation institution; and carry out a capstone project. The program’s ultimate goal is to provide the tools, resources, and training necessary for fellows to take on further leadership roles in her home country.

Description

Despite progress in improving the representation of women in the international security field, a gender gap remains in the nuclear security arena.Providing women with the appropriate tools, resources, and training encourages their presence and participation in this critical field. The Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship (RCMF) provides young women leaders the opportunity to participate in a multi-faceted, year-long nuclear security fellowship to gain greater knowledge in nuclear security. It also fosters a network of women leaders who promote nuclear security and builds linkages among professionals. This grant will provide the recipient of the 2018 RCMF with an internship at a U.S. university, a three-month internship at a leading U.S. nonproliferation institution, and funds to complete a capstone project.

Description

The unique voices and perspectives of women are vital to addressing global challenges in international security and the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction. While they are present in the global landscape of leaders, women are underrepresented among professionals and decision makers in this field, especially in many countries in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship (RCMF) provides women leaders in emerging countries with the opportunity to participate in a multi-faceted, year-long nonproliferation fellowship, which provides fellows with greater specialized knowledge; fosters a network of women leaders promoting nonproliferation; and builds linkages among nonproliferation professionals. RCMF includes a four-month fellowship at a U.S. academic institution; a three-month internship at a nonproliferation institution in Washington, DC; and a final capstone project that the fellow completes in her home country.
