Duration

Description
As of 2023, New York City has admitted 95,000 migrants (TRAC, 2023), more than twice the number of migrants admitted to Texas, California, and Florida combined. Mostly residing in temporary housing, they require assistance with school enrollment and support to meet their children’s educational needs. InsideSchools, an initiative of the Center for NYC Affairs and The New School for Social Research, launched this project to support recently arrived migrant families and asylum seekers in enrolling their children in public schools and accessing services such as English language instruction and special education. This grant will assist 2000 migrant families in registering their children in schools through multiple strategies. Through workshops conducted in shelters and tennonprofit partners serving migrants, InsideSchools will guide parents in finding suitable schools, navigating the registration process, and accessing language and special education services. The project will also provide personalized support through one-on-one appointments with staff and trained volunteers and a WhatsApp helpline for easy access to information.

For support of a research project on how expanded civics instruction, equitable education policy, and inclusive workforce strategies can strengthen American democracy
Date
Mar. 10, 2022
Duration
15 months
Description
In recent years, the United States has seen a significant decline in public education’s efficacy in building common civic agreements, shared knowledge, and a clear pathway to economic self-sufficiency. American public-school students perform well behind their peers in countries around the world, especially on key math and literacy exams, and the American economy has been unable to meet the full potential and needs of the national workforce, resulting in stagnant wages and growing economic inequality. Founded in 2020 at the New School, the Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy (IRPPE) is a research center that investigates the ways in which applied policy and practice can advance economic inclusion, civic engagement, and social equity goals. With Corporation support, IRPPE will identify ways to newly invest in innovative models of civic education that can maximize the social and economic impact of public education on civic engagement and workforce preparation.

With support from the Corporation, InsideSchools will develop a guided search for elementary schools in the Bronx, with the focus on better understanding what immigrant families seek to understand about public schools and providing this information in a clear and accessible manner. Through this project, InsideSchools will inform and guide families in New York City to maximize their opportunities in the elementary school process.

Description

With Corporation support, the New School for Social Research will develop “Democracy 2.0,” a collaborative project among scholars, journalists, and advocates in countries that are moving away from democracy. The New School will connect these actors through online and in-person convenings, and provide a digital platform where they can promote opportunities for democracy to push back against global threats of authoritarianism.
