Corporation’s renewed grant, along with funding from otherfoundations and donors will enable the Consortium to conducta host of research, teaching,networking, and professional advancement opportunities.

Description

As of 2023, New York City has admitted 95,000 migrants (TRAC, 2023), more than twice the number of migrants admitted to Texas, California, and Florida combined. Mostly residing in temporary housing, they require assistance with school enrollment and support to meet their children’s educational needs. InsideSchools, an initiative of the Center for NYC Affairs and The New School for Social Research, launched this project to support recently arrived migrant families and asylum seekers in enrolling their children in public schools and accessing services such as English language instruction and special education. This grant will assist 2000 migrant families in registering their children in schools through multiple strategies. Through workshops conducted in shelters and tennonprofit partners serving migrants, InsideSchools will guide parents in finding suitable schools, navigating the registration process, and accessing language and special education services. The project will also provide personalized support through one-on-one appointments with staff and trained volunteers and a WhatsApp helpline for easy access to information.

In recent years, the United States has seen a significant decline in public education’s efficacy in building common civic agreements, shared knowledge, and a clear pathway to economic self-sufficiency. American public-school students perform well behind their peers in countries around the world, especially on key math and literacy exams, and the American economy has been unable to meet the full potential and needs of the national workforce, resulting in stagnant wages and growing economic inequality. Founded in 2020 at the New School, the Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy (IRPPE) is a research center that investigates the ways in which applied policy and practice can advance economic inclusion, civic engagement, and social equity goals. With Corporation support, IRPPE will identify ways to newly invest in innovative models of civic education that can maximize the social and economic impact of public education on civic engagement and workforce preparation.

Description

For twenty years, InsideSchools has been the go-to source for over a million readers annually who want to better understand NYC public schools. An education project housed within the Center for New York City Affairs at The New School, InsideSchools provides independent insights on NYC schools, admissions resources, and data for public consumption all in one place. In rapid response to Covid-19, InsideSchools created InsideSchools+, an online community in which families from across the city share information, and tips, and get expert guidance. This grant from the Corporation will support InsideSchools during a critical phase of capacity building and planning by helping them work towards their goal of answering any question any NYC family has about its schools and doing so in a way that both amplifies families’ voices while creating new levers for parent leadership and advocacy.

The months and years to come will be particularly challenging for children in poverty, those with special needs, and students attending low-performing schools. In this difficult time, the support students receive at home is essential to their educational success. InsideSchools, a trusted resource for public school families in New York City, recently launched InsideSchools+, an online resource that provides information, guidance, and community. With support from the Corporation, InsideSchools+ will expand its offerings and target new services for families in need, specifically multilingual families citywide with tools and resources for families to advocate for their children and bolster their learning.

It has become the go-to site for behind-the-scenes perspectives on the UN and the United States’ rolerelevant to it. With Corporation support, PassBlue will continue to produce award-winning investigative journalism, exclusive stories, and data-driven articles.

With support from the Corporation, InsideSchools will expand their reach across an array of channels, including adding data to the InsideSchools website pages related to high schools, holding live events with and for families of high school students, amplifying existing support resources for FAFSA application completion, and more.

School choice is both an opportunity and a challenge for families in New York City. While families have dozens of schools to choose from, they spend many hours researching their options. In communities with low-income or immigrant populations, families are often overwhelmed by the choice system and confused about which schools would best serve their child’s particular needs. InsideSchools, founded in 2002 as a project of the New School’s Center for New York City Affairs, provides parents, teachers and administrators with reviews of each of the city’s 1,800 district and charter schools and 1,200 stand-alone pre-kindergarten programs using in-depth local knowledge from school visits and interviews with principals. With support from the Corporation, InsideSchools will develop a guided search for elementary schools in the Bronx, with the focus on better understanding what immigrant families seek to understand about public schools and providing this information in a clear and accessible manner. Through this project, InsideSchools will inform and guide families in New York City to maximize their opportunities in the elementary school process.

Around the world, countries with longstanding democratic traditions are experiencing destabilizing challenges to their institutions and political identity. Stresses on influential democracies are also affecting democratic projects in countries that are struggling to embrace them. In 1989, the New School began to organize “Democracy Seminars” in Eastern Europe, establishing a network of intellectuals and activists who were eager to engage in discussions about how to transition from authoritarian communism to democracy. With Corporation support, the New School for Social Research will develop “Democracy 2.0,” a collaborative project among scholars, journalists, and advocates in countries that are moving away from democracy. The New School will connect these actors through online and in-person convenings, and provide a digital platform where they can promote opportunities for democracy to push back against global threats of authoritarianism.

For political or economic reasons (often both), many universities and libraries in the developing world do not have access to scholarly journals. Since 1990, the Journal Donation Project (JDP) at the New School has aimed to change that. Over the past twenty-seven years, JDP has worked with nearly 500 institutions in some forty countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It now provides subscriptions to over 5,000 journals in fields ranging from the social sciences and humanities to medicine, technology, and agriculture. With Corporation support, JDP will continue to provide these important services to dozens of libraries and scholars across the globe.

The Center for Public Scholarship, housed at the New School for Social Research, aims to deepen public understanding of pressing social issues and make scholarship and expertise accessible. In 1988, the center established the social research conference series, intended to enhance public understanding of and influence ongoing debates on current social issues. With Corporation support, the center will host a panel discussion entitled, “Their America: The U.S. in the Eyes of the Rest of the World Post-Election,” to examine the effects of the divisive 2016 presidential election on the perception of the U.S. internationally. The panel will consist of Jerome Cohen (New York University), Oz Frankel (The New School), Alma Guillermoprieto (author), Nina Khrushcheva (The New School), Laura Secor (author), and moderator Aryeh Neier (Open Society Foundations).

Arien Mack, Professor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research, is a well-known psychologist and long-time Carnegie Corporation of New York grantee, having served as the project manager for some nine Corporation grants over the past 13 years. The Journal Donation Project, which the Corporation has supported on several occasions, is an international library assistance program that aids in the development of research and teaching capacity at universities in the developing world. The Invasive Other Conference, meanwhile, which is The New School’s 34th annual Social Research Conference, will explore the subject of migration in its many forms. With Corporation support, The New School will continue to operate the Journal Donation Project and will successfully host the Invasive Other Conference, with Professor Mack overseeing both initiatives.
