The Leadership Conference Education Fund

Project Title

As a final grant for support of its voting and voting rights program

Date

Sep. 11, 2025

Duration

12 months

Description

Despite no challenges to the 2024 presidential election results, false claims of election fraud in the 2020 election continue to fuel efforts to restrict voting access for Americans across the country. At the same time, a combination of social media, artificial intelligence (AI), and bad actors (foreign and domestic) seek to spread disinformation and sow division, contributing to increased public distrust in elections and government. With renewed Corporation support, The Leadership Conference Education Fund aims at increasing voting and protecting voting rights and in addressing the impact of AI in spreading disinformation and misinformation. The Leadership Conference Education Fund will also further its efforts to promote greater technology platform accountability, especially as AI advances, to ensure tech companies have in place and enforce voter interference/election disinformation policies.

Description

Since the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder dismantling key voter protections in the Voting Rights Act of 1965, more than twenty states have advanced policies that make it more difficult for already marginalized Americans to exercise their right to vote. Moreover, millions of Americans are at risk of being discounted in the upcoming 2020 Census, which determines congressional representation and the distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds to states and localities. Since 1969, the Leadership Conference Education Fund has served as the education and research arm of one of the largest legacy civil rights coalitions in the country. The education fund works to build public will for laws and policies that promote and protect the civil and human rights of all people. This includes advancing voting rights protections and guaranteeing a fair, accurate census. With renewed Corporation support, the education fund will spearhead public education campaigns that empower and mobilize advocates at local, state, and federal levels

Description

Recent years have challenged civil rights advocates and the disenfranchised communities they work to represent. Jurisdictions nationwide are proposing discriminatory electoral changes quicker than the courts can strike them down; the Census Bureau faces deep funding cuts that jeopardize the accuracy of the decennial census, which helps determine congressional representation and allocate federal resources; and the current Administration has raised unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud, casting serious doubt on U.S. electoral processes. As the leading expert on civil rights research and education, the Leadership Conference Education Fund builds public will for federal policies that promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the U.S. With renewed Corporation support, the education fund will continue to draw attention to a wide range of pressing civil rights issues, including voting rights, an accurate 2020 census, immigration, and a fair, independent judiciary.

Description

Civil rights advocates in the United States are at a pivotal moment. The country is about to enter its first presidential election campaign without the full protection of the Voting Rights Act since the law was partially struck down by the Supreme Court in 2013—and many state and local governments have introduced bills to limit access to the polls. And although the 2020 census is five years away, efforts to defund it and exclude underrepresented groups from the decennial tradition are already underway. With Corporation support, as the leading expert on civil rights research and education, the Leadership Conference Education Fund (the education fund) will continue its public education, outreach, and communications campaign to educate the public about the importance of voting rights; the 2020 Census; and redistricting. It will also undertake strategic planning, which includes ensuring a sound plan for succession of the organization’s leadership.
