Description
The Bridging the Gap (BtG) subprogram has largely focused on the supply side of the gap, providing academics with the skills and knowledge to engage with the policy world. There has been less emphasis on the demand side, providing policymakers with opportunities to engage with scholarship. Our efforts have also predominately benefited PhD students in international relations, with comparatively little emphasis on graduates in this field with terminal master’s degrees who pursue careers in the policy world and also received little to no formal training in leadership and organizational management during their studies. To address this aspect of the gap, Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Public Policy (Maxwell) will conduct a series of training workshops for early- to mid-career policy practitioners with master’s degrees to improve their leadership and management skills and introduce them to the most recent scholarship in their areas of focus.

The immigration debate in the United States is mired in misinformation and misleading or false claims, and the public is often unable to access reliable sources and data from federal officials, who often erect barriers to block the free flow of information about their own practices. Since 2005, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University has been using the Freedom of Information Act to collect, validate, analyze, and distribute immigration data from the federal government. With Corporation support, TRAC will continue to obtain and analyze records on immigration enforcement practices and their impact on individuals and communities. TRAC will compile this data into understandable forms for widespread distribution to advocates, public interest lawyers, journalists, and other stakeholders in the immigration field.

Although immigration policy and immigration enforcement, in particular, have become major issues in American politics, the current debate about the country’s immigration policies is filled with misinformation. Unfounded claims and selective disclosure have become rampant, causing widespread fear within local communities, especially among immigrants and people of color. Founded in 1989 at Syracuse University, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) is an independent, nonpartisan data research center that makes the actual workings of the federal government more readily accessible to researchers, advocates, and to the general public. Since 2005, TRAC has been processing, vetting, and analyzing millions of records (often beginning with the labor-intensive Freedom of Information Act request process) detailing the operations of the federal immigration enforcement system. With Corporation support, TRAC will continue to be the go-to source for facts and data about the federal government’s immigration enforcement policies and its impact on immigrants and communities across the country.

Despite high levels of economic productivity, education, and community integration among immigrants, advocates, journalists, and policymakers alike are struggling to overcome a political environment that has become mired in misinformation and false claims. As a result, unsubstantiated rumors about crime and false representation of immigration policies are contributing to widespread fear in local communities. The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University works to make the actual workings of the federal government more readily accessible to the public. Using Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, TRAC obtains, validates, and compiles data from numerous government agencies that is frequently used by journalists, advocates, and the public. With Corporation support, TRAC will expand its technical and organizational capacities, and ensure that the actual effects of immigration policies are being properly monitored.

When government agencies announce new policies and practices, there is often little public information available to measure the impact. To accurately judge the worth of these reforms, the day-to-day minutia of an individual agency must be closely tracked. This often means digging through intricate layers of data that is not readily available to the public. Without this information, it is impossible to assess if the government is executing its announced policies, or whether these actions are achieving their stated goals. Established in 1989 at Syracuse University, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) is a nonpartisan data research center that collects, validates, analyzes, and distributes internal administrative data and reports documenting what federal agencies are doing day-to-day. With Corporation support, TRAC will collect data on how federal agencies are administering immigration laws; compile regularly updated authoritative data monitoring immigration enforcement practices; and widely distribute this information in readily accessible and understandable forms.
