Student Leadership Network
Project Title
For core support of Student Leadership Network New York
Date
Sep. 12, 2024
Duration
36 months
Description
Although securing a postsecondary credential has become increasingly vital to an individual’s ability to secure employment and achieve economic mobility, resources to support college access and success remain insufficient. To address this gap, the Corporation supports a cohort of college access organizations working to meet the varied needs of New York City students. Student Leadership Network’s (SLN) CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) places full-time college counselors in schools with lessened caseloads to promote college awareness and access. Research shows that CBI participants are more likely to enroll in college in the fall after high school graduation than students from similar backgrounds who did not (80 percent versus 58 percent) and are more likely to attain a bachelor’s degree within six years (41 percent versus 13 percent). Prior Corporation support enabled SLN to engage over 18,000 students through their Girls’ Education work, and CBI for students across twenty-six partner schools. Continued support for CBI will enable SLN to reach approximately 16,000 New York City students and alumni annually, including direct support for 2,100 seniors, 10,400 sixth through eleventh graders, and 3,500 CBI alumni.

SLN’s CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) program boasts nearly two decades of successful college access program provision, supporting nearly 19,000 young adults to enroll in college. Past Corporation support allowed SLN to build on their Alumni Engagement Team’s (AET) capacity building and programming to further develop SLN’s alumni engagement strategy both generally and in response to COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on their alumni whose postsecondary momentum has been upended. Continued Corporation support will allow for further development of alumni strategy, including strengthening collaboration between AET, CBI, and partner organizations, maximizing their online communication tools, refining current programming, and expanding their newest initiative, Bridge Through College.

Description
Student Leadership Network (SLN) supports a pipeline of young people from diverse underserved communities to access educational opportunities that prepare them to lead successful lives. SLN’s CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) program boasts nearly two decades of successful college access program provision, having supported nearly 18,000 young adults to enroll in college. Corporation support will allow SLN to build on their Alumni Engagement Team’s year of capacity building and programming, to further develop SLN’s alumni engagement strategy both generally and in response to COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on our alumni whose postsecondary momentum has been upended. SLN’s proposed activities will occur in two concurrent phases in order to both deepen SLN’s connection with alumni and their connection to each other, and to provide targeted programming, establish impactful partnerships, and develop a clear, defined pathway for high school seniors seeking alternative postsecondary options.

Description
Student Leadership Network (SLN) empowers a diverse pipeline of young people from underserved communities to access educational opportunities that prepare them to lead successful lives. SLN’s CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) program boasts nearly two decades of successful college access programming, having supported nearly 15,000 young adults to enroll in college. Support from the Corporation will help SLN build capacity in support of their alumni’s postsecondary success. SLN will analyze alumni data to clearly determine levers of change that will help further improve students’ outcomes. SLN will also assess their Alumni Engagement Team’s roles, responsibilities, and capacity to address alumni needs, as well as design and implement original programming and establish partnerships with persistence programs on college campuses and community-based organizations that best meet students’ demonstrated needs.
