Description

The deterioration in U.S./EU-Russia relations, alongside the decline in Western expertise on Russia, prompted the creation of the University Consortium (UC) in 2015 with support from the Corporation. UC’s original concept connected six universities from the United States, Europe, and Russia to pursue intensive academic and policy-relevant dialogue, training, and exchanges. Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine dramatically transformed UC’s composition. With renewed support, UC will continue to promote engagements among Americans, Europeans, and Russians to better comprehend the profound conflict between Russia and the West, but without the participation of Russian individuals or institutions from inside Russia. Withrenewed funding, UCwill also expand its alumni network of professionals.

Duration

Description

The relationships among the United States, Europe, and Russia concern some of the world’s most critical challenges. In a climate of tensions between Russia and the United States and Europe, opportunities for scholarly engagements and considerations of cooperative approaches to global threats are rare. With support from the Corporation, six universities in the United States, Russia, and Europe formed a University Consortium (UC) a few years ago to advance training on, and seek solutions to, international issues by enabling regular interactions between students and faculty, as well as between UC members and policymakers. Toward these aims, the UC conducts academic programs and organizes policy-level conferences hosted by participating institutions on a rotational basis. With renewed support, the UC will continue its programs.

Duration

Description

Increasing political tensions between Russia and the United States/European Union, combined with a decline of Western expertise on Russia and Eurasia prompted the creation in 2015 of the University Consortium (the UC). The UC is an academic venture that pools the strength of partner universities, students, and professors to build professional networks among younger experts. Comprised of six universities in the United States, Europe, and Russia, it also serves to promote research, engagement, and policy outreach on Euro-Atlantic issues among upcoming academics and the policy communities. With continued support, the UC will extend its reach by increasing the number of accepted student fellows who will work to apply academic insight to policymaking for Euro-Atlantic cooperation.
