Roosevelt Institute
Project Title
For its program to develop a diverse network of policy advocates
Date
Dec. 08, 2022
Duration
24 months
Description
Young Americans are actively advocating for social change across the country, leading national advocacy campaigns around issues like gun violence, immigration reform, and climate change. Yet very few play a role in government and policy making. Founded in 1987, the Roosevelt Institute houses both a nationally renowned economic policy think tank and a network of diverse, emerging policy leaders. The Roosevelt Network actively recruits, develops, and supports rising policymakers, researchers, and advocates across the United States, focusing on communities historically denied political power to develop and implement innovative policy solutions. With Corporation support, the Roosevelt Network will continue to connect students to broader civic infrastructure and empower young people to become powerful civic actors that strengthen a diverse and multiracial American democracy.

Description
Young Americans are actively advocating for social change across the country, leading national advocacy campaigns around issues like gun violence, immigration reform, and climate change. In 2018, 38 percent of eligible voters between the ages of 18 and 29 participated in the midterm elections, the highest midterm participation of this age group in twenty-five years. Yet, only 19 percent of millennials have trust in the government, despite 70 percent believing that government should play a larger role in solving societal problems. Founded in 1987, the Roosevelt Institute houses both a nationally renowned economic policy think tank and a network of diverse, emerging policy leaders. The Roosevelt Network actively recruits and trains ambitious student leaders who can work with policymakers and community leaders to develop and implement innovative policy solutions for the local communities they serve. With Corporation support, the Roosevelt Network will continue to connect students to broader civic infrastructure and empower young people to become powerful civic actors that strengthen American democracy.
Project Title
For support of an initiative to expand student voter engagement, including on community colleges
Date
Mar. 08, 2018
Duration
24 months
Description
Although millennials have the lowest voter turnout of any age group, they potentially hold one of the largest shares of the American electorate. Research shows that the most important method of shaping a person’s long-term civic engagement is getting them involved in a successful political or policy effort between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four. With more than 10,000 members organized on 130 campuses and cities in nearly forty states, the Roosevelt Institute provides young people the tools, trainings, and guidance they need to engage their peers and community in the political process. With Corporation support, the institute will strengthen its national network of student leaders by increasing community college student engagement and expanding the institute’s regional presence in the Midwest.
Project Title
For a national youth voter engagement campaign
Date
Mar. 03, 2016
Duration
24 months
Description
As the largest and most diverse generation in the United States’ history, Millennials (those born between 1981 and the early 2000s) have the unique potential to be a potent force for change. Yet the 2014 election cycle saw the lowest youth voter turnout rate in history–just 20 percent. Looking ahead, only 35 percent of Millennials report being “extremely interested” in the 2016 elections and fewer than 30 percent of young people believe their vote matters. Established in 1972, the Roosevelt Institute is devoted to carrying forward the legacy and values of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt by developing bold ideas and leadership that expand opportunities for all Americans. With Corporation support, the Roosevelt Institute will develop the Next Generation Blueprint for 2016, a crowd sourced strategy by and for youth to increase awareness of public policy issues significant to this group and to increase civic participation.
