Arms control and disarmament experts often struggle to communicate effectively with policymakers and the public, particularly as the information environment grows more fragmented and fast-moving. ReThink Media, a communications organization focused on promoting peace, will continue to train experts to develop targeted messaging, analyze media narratives, and deploy earned and owned digital media strategies. This project will develop a data-informed messaging framework on U.S.-China nuclear relations, expand the use of non-traditional media, and continue providing communications support to the nuclear expert community to help ensure credible voices reach policymakers and the public.

Date
Sep. 07, 2017
Duration
20 months
Description
Public perception of nuclear issues is in flux. ReThink Media Inc. will lead an opinion and message research process to learn more about where the public stands on nuclear weapons issues today. Initially, ReThink will convene conversations among the nuclear security community to scope and shape the inquiry and to bring in end-users from the outset. ReThink will then engage with one or more research firms and will manage the research process to produce new polling and messaging. Once the research is complete, ReThink will work with Corporation grantees and their partners to improve understanding of what the data show and how to adapt their communications to the new landscape. The ultimate goal is to facilitate more effective messages based on the latest research about where the public stands and which messages resonate.

Description
The United States faces a series of connected challenges on nuclear policy in Iran, North Korea, nuclear modernization, and U.S.-Russia relations. While recent developments are daunting, they have increased the salience of nuclear issues and created new opportunities for a public conversation about nuclear arms control, nonproliferation, and global security. ReThink Media (ReThink) will provide the arms control and disarmament community resources, advice, and technical assistance to inform this conversation. As the constituency concerned with nuclear weapons has steadily diminished over the past two decades, ReThink will work with its partners to understand where the public stands on these issues and how to communicate more effectively for today’s audiences.

Duration

Description
The nuclear security field tends to be long on research and short on communications capacity. Yet strong media outreach is essential to ensuring that sound analysis is heard above the din. ReThink Media (“ReThink”) fills this gap by working with policy organizations to hone their media skills and develop a strong shared narrative that can influence policymaking priorities. ReThink will conduct research on public opinion and assess current messaging and media coverage. It will then provide training to help organizations within the sector communicate more effectively. One focus will be on enhancing the sector’s capacity to create digital, video, and infographic content. ReThink will also provide targeted training and support for the Fissile Materials Working Group (FMWG) in advance of the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit.
