Project Title

For capacity building to expand the College Access: Research & Action (CARA) model outside of New York City

Date

Sep. 15, 2022

Duration

12 months

Description

College Access: Research & Action (CARA) ensures that first-generation college students, low-income students, and students of color have the knowledge and support necessary to enroll in and persist through college. While students need opportunities to learn about college and career pathways, most public schools and institutions of higher education are not structured to provide this assistance. Since 2011, CARA’s programs, research, and policy work have addressed these inequities. CARA works with high schools, community-based organizations, and higher education institutions to move access and success guidance from an ‘enrichment for some’ to an ‘entitlement for all’ model. CARA then uses its programs as laboratories for research on college access and persistence issues, utilizing learning to advocate for more equitable higher education policies. Support from the Corporation will allow CARA to introduce its models and expand its work beyond the East Coast to a wider group of students across the country.

Date

Jun. 09, 2022

With continued Corporation support, the network will lead collaborative research and publication support workshops for African researchers, and build visibility for African scholars and PASR with a podcast, magazine, and lecture series.

Project Title

For support to extend the College Connect Peer-to-Peer program into the summer before matriculation

Date

Sep. 02, 2021

Duration

12 months

Description

Since 2011 College Access: Research & Action (CARA) has ensured that first-generation college students, low-income students, and students of color have the knowledge and support necessary to enroll in and persist through college. While students need opportunities to learn about college and career pathways, most New York City public schools and institutions of higher education are not structured to provide this assistance. One of CARA’s primary program models is the Peer-to-Peer Model that addresses the gap in college access and completion guidance by empowering a range of young people to work within their own institutions to support their peers through post-secondary exploration, the college application and matriculation processes, and/or through college. CARA intends to work in collaboration with The City University of New York’s (CUNY) Central Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and a set of CUNY partner campuses on “CUNY College Connect” – a program that will implement a CUNY-wide peer-to-peer advisement system that will support students through matriculation, year one of college, and beyond. Corporation support will contribute to CUNY College Connect by providing funding for Peer Leader pay.

Date

Sep. 12, 2019

Duration

36 months

Description

Deteriorating conditions for academics in parts of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are affecting scholarly productivity, access to field sites, and scholar mobility. In consultation with leading scholar mobility providers, the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) and the Middle East Studies Association have designed a Global Academy to fill existing gaps. Through an established network of transregional institutional partnerships, this multi-funder initiative will: forge peer-to-peer networks; identify professional opportunities; and sustain research collaborations, mentoring, and knowledge production among displaced MENA-based scholars and their counterparts outside the region. Corporation funds will support workshops, publications, a new website, academic conferences, and grants for travel and research.

Project Title

For piloting the Ready to Succeed program

Date

Dec. 05, 2019

Duration

15 months

Description

Approximately sixty percent of New York City public school graduates who go on to attend college enroll at the City University of New York (CUNY), creating a unique opportunity for the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and CUNY to work together to improve college persistence outcomes for these students. With this goal in mind, and with current Corporation support, CUNY conducted planning work for its proposed Ready to Succeed (RtS) program. RtS is a research-based intervention which aims to provide eleventh grade New York City public school students with customized information regarding college admission, affordability, and recommended actions to improve their odds of earning a college degree. This renewal grant will support CUNY to incorporate the lessons of the planning period into a RtS pilot program with at least four high schools, positioning CUNY to better understand the feasibility and potential impacts of a large-scale implementation of RtS.

Project Title

For planning the City of New York Early Entry program

Date

Mar. 07, 2019

Duration

10 months

Description

Four-year graduation rates in New York City’s public high schools are at an all-time high of 74 percent, and the City University of New York (CUNY) has also made progress in improving college graduation rates across its campuses. However, too many public school graduates continue to enter the CUNY system unprepared, and more work remains to be done such that college readiness and completion can keep pace with high school graduation. Since approximately 60 percent of New York City public school graduates who go on to attend college enroll at CUNY, there is a unique opportunity for the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and CUNY to work together to improve outcomes for these students. With Corporation support, CUNY will plan to launch an experimental program, CUNY Early Entry, that will deliver customized messages and guidance to NYCDOE eleventh and twelfth graders with the goal of helping them take specific actions to enhance their likelihood of success in college.
