Refugees International
Project Title
For a project safeguarding durable return to Syria in the post-Assad transition
Date
Jun. 04, 2026
Duration
24 months
Description
The fall of the Assad regime has triggered a hopeful but precarious transition where coercive refugee returns threaten to destabilize Syria’s fragile governance and ignite renewed violence. Refugees International (RI) will implement a two-year initiative to establish rights-based repatriation standards. The project bridges reactive aid and long-term stability by conducting field research to produce Housing-Land-Property guidance, security and reconciliation standards, and model policy tools for Syrian and international stakeholders critical for returnee planning in partnership with local actors. RI will mobilize this evidence through regional policy dialogues and civil society participation grants that empower local Syrian partners to co-design return protocols.
