Description
Education policy is advanced primarily state-by-state, and local education organizations are often best-positioned to drive change and improvement. These organizations can achieve greater impact through the coordinated efforts of a network rather than as individual actors. Policy Innovators in Education (PIE) is a network that creates connections and provides supports to eighty-eight state-based education organizations and twenty-four national partners working to affect and sustain policy change across thirty-two states and the District of Columbia. Specifically, the PIE Network: connects members to one another through shared learning opportunities, convenings, role-alike affinity groups, and skill building training; supports members with relevant and timely content to inform their work, elevating best practices, synthesizing data and materials, and offering one-to-one support; and catalyzes action by building members’ knowledge and capacity to effectively campaign for relevant issues. Renewed Corporation support will enable PIE to continue to play these critical roles in order to advance state education policy across ideological lines.

Description
While the federal government provides a framework for education reform, education policy is advanced primarily state-by-state. Local education organizations often have more capacity than state agencies to drive place-based change and improvement, and an emerging social theory and literature suggests those organizations can achieve greater impact through the coordinated efforts of a network than as individual actors. Policy Innovators in Education (PIE) is a network that creates connections and provides supports to eighty-seven education organizations working to affect and sustain policy change across thirty-five states and the District of Columbia. Specifically, PIE connects members across diverse ideological and political lines through meetings and virtual opportunities; builds members’ capacity and spreads best practices by aggregating information and investing in infrastructure to sustain connections across state lines; and amplifies the voice of the education reform movement by promoting advances towards common goals. Renewed Corporation support will enable PIE to continue to play these critical roles in order to advance state education policy.

Description
While federal policy provides a framework for education reform, only 10-14 percent of federal resources reach schools. States are the primary leaders in education reform. In a time of innovation and policy change, concerted efforts by state groups are even more vital for ensuring sustainable progress within individual states. By working on complex policy issues through a network of likeminded organizations, reformers can build relationships that amplify their resources around reform. Founded in 2011, the PIE Network creates such connections between state organizations and provides support for leaders by building a constituency that collectively advances policy reform. While not directly advocating for particular policies itself, the PIE Network is therefore able to support organizations along the ideological spectrum, particularly through convenings and the dissemination of evidence-based policy resources. With Corporation support, the PIE Network will continue to strengthen its core capacity for advocacy, build leadership skills through a Leadership Institute, drive strategic initiatives including the elevation of stakeholder voice, and host its annual Building Bridges Summit to connect state-level strategists.
