Date

Mar. 04, 2021

Duration

12 months

Description

Founded in 1922, PEN America stands at the intersection of literature and human rights to protect free expression in the United States and worldwide. Their mission is to unite writers and their allies to celebrate creative expression and defend the liberties that make it possible. Threats to free expression manifest in many different forms, including limits on the ability to share and discuss ideas, which the United States has seen a rising trend towards in recent years as universities continue to limit—or allow students to limit—academic and discursivefreedom on campus. With Corporation support, PEN America will address these challenges through training programs, practical guidance and tools that facilitate conversations preserving free speech, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Description

Ongoing criticisms of mainstream news media has led to the degradation of legitimate news organizations, the proliferation of unfounded conspiracy theories that damage reputations and provoke violence, and even attacks upon the idea of truth itself, giving “alternative facts” an unprecedented platform and audience. PEN America maintains an extensive history of advocating for the freedom of the press, both internationally and in the United States. It maintains a national membership of more than 7,500 people, many of them prominent writers; and it partners with numerous national human and civil rights organizations to push back against efforts to restrict fundamental freedoms and the pursuit of truth and facts. With Corporation support, in honor of the author Barbara Goldsmith, PEN America will continue its wide-ranging work to defend press freedoms through advocacy, litigation, and trainings for writers and journalists.
