Duration

Description

The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (the Partnership) was founded in 2007 in collaboration with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) administrators, donors, and community partners to directly manage a network of LAUSD’s highest-need schools. Today, the Partnership manages twenty district schools that serve over 13,000 students in Transitional Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Since the start of the Partnership’s management, its network of schools has made substantial improvements in student outcomes. The high school graduation rate increased from 36 percent in 2008 to 92 percent in 2024, and 86 percent of 2024 graduates planned to pursue post-secondary education (a one percentage point increase from 2023). Previous support from the Corporation enabled the Partnership to build the capacity of its network of schools by developing the leadership skills of school principals, assistant principals, and teacher leaders, and engage in ongoing policy and advocacy work to improve conditions for change. Renewed support will enable the Partnership to support their twenty network schools and develop and advocate for equitable policies and scale proven successes.

Date

Sep. 15, 2022

Duration

36 months

Description

In order to improve learning experiences for all students, we must both transform schools and build the capacity to sustain improvement. The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (the Partnership) was founded in 2007 to transform a group of historically underperforming schools in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Today the network comprises twenty schools that serve 13,550 students, 96 percent of whom qualify for free- or reduced-price lunch. These schools reached an average high school graduation rate of 86 percent in 2021, as compared to 36 percent in 2008. Current Corporation support has enabled the Partnership to build the capacity of school and teacher leaders, and to work with LAUSD to catalyze district-wide innovations that benefit all 500,000 LAUSD students. The Partnership has harnessed the power of its network to both share promising practices and to inform district policy. With renewed support, the Partnership will support school leaders and teachers in the network to meet student needs and prepare them for postsecondary success and work to advance system-level change aligned to the Partnership’s approach.

Project Title

For a project to support school redesign work and district partnerships beyond Los Angeles

Date

Sep. 13, 2018

Duration

24 months

Description

Opening new, innovative schools in place of failing schools has emerged as a proven strategy to improve student achievement in places that have previously seen a persistent record of failure. However, while this has proven effective in some places, it is neither always feasible nor desirable in every context. The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (the Partnership) was founded to address this strategic gap, and over the last ten years has worked with high-need, historically low-performing schools to implement robust improvement strategies, bringing innovative learning models to the most challenging contexts. They have also worked intentionally to aggregate and share insights from these experiences to inform district-level policy, and they have fomented a strong partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) as a result. Now entering their second decade of work, the Partnership will build on their successes by continuing to transform schools in LAUSD and also partnering with leaders in other school systems to empower all students with a high-quality education.

Project Title

For a project to support school turnaround work, policy development, and dissemination activities

Date

Sep. 08, 2016

Duration

24 months

Description

Turning around failing schools has proven difficult. Yet, many schools require significant reform, and exist in places without the conditions for school closure and replacement. It is thus imperative that the field finds ways to improve extant schools and better serve the students in them. One organization that has shown promise in its approach to turning around failing schools is the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (Partnership). It is currently one of the largest urban school turnaround organizations in the country, directly managing seventeen public schools serving nearly 15,000 students in LAUSD. During the grant period, the Partnership will 1) continue to advance its school transformation work, working to improve the academic achievement of students in some of Los Angeles’ highest-need schools, and 2) codify its in-district school turnaround successes through a case study that will inform the work of communities across the country that seek to transform historically under-performing schools.
