Parent Institute for Quality Education

Project Title

For project support to empower parents and students to graduate high school and transition to college

Date

Dec. 12, 2024

Duration

24 months

Description

Many students from low-income families lack access to essential guidance during their high school years, key for college readiness. Without support, these students may struggle with tasks such as understanding college options, completing SAT testing, navigating the FAFSA process, and submitting applications. The Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE), a nonprofit operating in 14 states, engages families by providing them with the skills to partner with schools. With Corporation support, they will implement the Bridge to College program, a program for 11th-grade families, followed by post-workshop sessions in 12th grade and check-in phone calls to ensure students stay on track for graduation. Participant families will be located in rural communities of Central Valley, California including Fresno and Modesto. This year-round initiative will provide weekly English, Spanish, and Farsi sessions to 120 families, covering essential topics like financial aid resources, time management, and academic advising. The program also includes a resource fair and last-mile Carnegie scholarships to help students with out-of-pocket expenses to access higher education.

Project Title

For project support of a year-long intervention responsive to families’ and educators’ needs in California’s Central Valley, RFP Yr 2

Date

Sep. 14, 2023

Duration

12 months

Description

The Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) has supported low-income families of color, especially Latino immigrants, for over 30 years. PIQE collaborates closely with schools and districts to offer 4-9 week programs that help families navigate educational systems, nurture children’s social-emotional development, and develop advocacy skills through civic engagement. With funding from the Corporation’s RFP on family engagement to support student learning, PIQE will continue to serve Latino families, many of whom work in California’s Central Valley’s agricultural sector, throughout the academic year via a cohort model, their signature family engagement program, and educators’ workshops. PIQE will also partner with the Dana Center at the University of Texas-Austin to expand their successful model to Texas. Additionally, PIQE plans to share their expertise on family engagement by hosting a cross-state meeting and developing a playbook to guide partners in other states to sustain their work.

Project Title

For project support to launch their annual parent cohort in Central Valley

Date

Jun. 09, 2022

Duration

16 months

Description

Although research shows that students succeed when families, schools and communities work together, immigrant families face multiple barriers to engaging with their children’s educators and schools, including linguistic, cultural, and socio-economic obstacles. For 35 years, The Parent Institute for Quality Education’s (PIQE) evidence-based family engagement programs have empowered low-income families of color and in particular Latinx immigrant families, to better understand the complex American education system and to advocate for their children’s education. With support from the Corporation’s request for proposals for family engagement to support student learning grant opportunity, PIQE will partner with schools in Central Valley, California’s most rural low-income region, to help Latinx Spanish-speaking families (a) navigate school systems, (b) support their children socio emotional development and STEM skills, and (c) build collaborative partnerships with educators and schools.
