Duration

Description

The location of the Pacific islands has long set them at the crossroads of geopolitical competition, a position of strategic importance that is growing in a global order largely shaped by U.S.-China relations. Islands themselves are understudied as a unit of analysis for understanding and influencing larger shifts in international affairs. The Pacific Center for Island Security (PCIS) seeks to break down information silos around geopolitical activities in the Northern Pacific through a two-part project. First, they will create a comprehensive tracking infrastructure to analyze major powers’ military, diplomatic, and economic activity in islands. Second, they aim to develop local capacity within Micronesia for the analysis of geopolitical issues by supporting local scholars and convening a group of decisionmakers from the region to discuss a shared security agenda. This project will provide a new view of the islands from the islands.
