Project Title

For one-time funding for a project to analyze the role of cities in the politics of nuclear weapons as part of a Request for Proposals (RFP) on "Understanding the Politics of Nuclear Weapons"

Date

Sep. 14, 2023

Duration

36 months

Description

Foreign relations and national security policy are typically thought to be issues for the federal government. But cities increasingly are seeking to influence these policies, including those about nuclear weapons.Cities are adopting resolutions declaring nuclear-free zones and collaborating with foreign cities and non-governmental organizations to advocate for nuclear reductions. While scholars have studied the impact of this “city diplomacy” on other issues, little attention has been paid to understanding its relationship to nuclear policy. This project will fill a gap in understanding of the role of cities in nuclear weapons politics, including the motivations for cities and city leaders to be involved and the impact they have on policy debates in the United States, and especially on the policy preferences of locally elected members of Congress.

Project Title

For a project on media and security studies in the Arab region

Date

Sep. 15, 2022

Duration

0 months

Description

The Arab region has a vibrant media industry, numerous academic units that teach journalism and media studies, and governments and non-state actors that deploy media and information technologies. However, resources and institutions are needed to grapple with urgent information and media-related challenges of transparency, privacy, and accountability, and their impact on governance, social cohesion, and political life. With Corporation support, the Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South at Northwestern University in Qatar will launch an Arab Information and Media Studies Society to strengthen the institutional bases of the field in the Arab region. It will connect scholars and build media studies as a multidisciplinary, trilingual, academically rigorous, policy-relevant, and public-facing field. Corporation funds will support research, workshops, fellowships, and a security studies cluster at the Institute.

Project Title

For an academic consortium on behavioral science and nuclear deterrence

Date

Sep. 10, 2020

Duration

24 months

Description

Cognitive science and neurobiology have made great advances in understanding how people make high-stakes decisions under duress, but current nuclear deterrence practice does not adequately incorporate these insights. Most deterrence models continue to assume decisionmakers will behave in a way that is generally rational, even under extreme stress and time pressure. These assumptions run contrary to current scientific understanding of how people assess and respond to risk. Through a consortium approach anchored by three partnering organizations–Northwestern University, Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), and the PopTech Institute–this project will engage multiple disciplines across the behavioral sciences. By connecting the fields of nuclear risk reduction and cognitive and behavioral sciences, the consortium will offer meaningful, practical insights into how nuclear deterrence is practiced and provide recommendations for building greater resiliency.

Project Title

For the Next Generation Science Exemplar (NGSX) Learning System project to develop and field-test a new pathway for professional learning that integrates blended learning experiences for teachers with the enactment of educative instructional materials des

Date

Jun. 01, 2017

Duration

24 months

Description

There is a significant and stubborn challenge before this country in improving science teaching and learning. While we have two visionary documents – the National Research Council’s Framework of K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) – the changes called for in these documents have been slow to find their way into classrooms, and they raise new challenges for teachers, schools and districts. Northwestern University’s Learning While Teaching project is a research-based designed response built on the success of the NGSX Learning System that addresses the challenges of scaling-up K-12 teachers’ capacity and confidence with three-dimensional learning and teaching. This grant will support the refinement of a new and much needed model of professional learning for K-12 science teachers. Teachers will learn about and use educative instructional materials in science along with tools and resources that are designed for the NGSS. Through these experiences teachers will build capacity and confidence to make changes in their practice, and in their understanding of how students engage in progressive knowledge building about the natural world.
