Historically, increased immigration has yielded positive economic and social benefits to the United States, the global community, and—most importantly—to immigrants themselves. Legal immigration fills critical labor gaps experienced by American businesses, reunites separated families, provides refuge to those fleeing crises and oppression, and introduces Americans to new cultures and ideas. Founded in 2015, the Niskanen Center is a nonpartisan, centrist think tank and policy advocacy organization that uses a rigorous, evidence-based approach to engaging policymakers across the political spectrum around policy issues. The center’s immigration program is committed to protecting vulnerable immigrant populations, relieving labor shortages, and energizing the economy by expanding immigration pathways. With Corporation support, the Niskanen Center’s immigration program will educate policymakers about the current state of immigration in the United States and advocate for pro-immigrant policy solutions that are innovative, practical, and politically viable.

However, immigrants and immigration are major contributors to national prosperity, helping to fill critical labor gaps and tackle global humanitarian issues. The Niskanen Center is a libertarian nonpartisan policy institute that actively engages policymakers to address policy issues using a rigorous evidence-based approach. The center believes that pragmatic immigration policies can make the United States a safer, more prosperous, and more welcoming country. With Corporation support, the Niskanen Center’s immigration program will educate policymakers and help to change the broader narrative on immigration by developing policy solutions that address pressing problems in ways that are not only innovative and practical, but also politically viable.

Description
As immigration has become an increasingly partisan issue, nurturing a strong, moderate middle is increasingly important. Identifying and supporting leaders that have the trust of moderate and conservative Americans and are willing to engage in the immigration debate is crucial to the success of immigration reform over time. Linda Chavez, who formerly served as Director of the Office of Public Liaison under President Reagan, is a conservative leader who has earned the respect of conservatives and has continually advocated for sensible immigration reform. With Corporation support, Chavez will work with the Niskanen Center to produce op-eds and appear in major radio and television media outlets, public debates, and social media to engage conservatives on immigration reform and immigrant integration. Chavez is a senior fellow with the Niskanen Center.

The 2016 presidential campaigns and general election were clear testaments to the salience and power of immigration issues among American voters. In recent years, conservative leaders from a variety of backgrounds, including the faith, business, and law enforcement communities, have been working alongside immigration reform advocates to inform the immigration debate and weigh in on pragmatic immigration policies that make America safer, more prosperous, and more welcoming. The Niskanen Center is a libertarian nonpartisan policy institute that actively engages policymakers to address issues using a rigorous evidence-based approach. Linda Chavez, former staff director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights under President Reagan, is a senior fellow at Niskanen Center, actively engaging conservatives on immigration reform and immigrant integration. With Corporation support, Chavez and the Niskanen Center’s immigration program will contribute to the enrichment of the public debate on immigration.
