Description

To advance a vision in which all students are prepared for postsecondary success, the New Designs portfolio supports the creation of innovative schools that personalize student learning, as well as the capacity-building of adults and systems in support of these efforts. NewSchools Venture Fund (NewSchools) is an important partner in advancing this work. Founded in 1998, NewSchools has a strong reputation for sourcing, vetting, and supporting high-quality school models and education ventures as well as the leaders necessary to the success of those efforts. Since 2015, NewSchools has supported the creation of over 110 innovative schools that will collectively serve 82,000 at full enrollment, with 75 percentof schools achieving at or above average growth in math and reading each year and invested in educational ventures that reach 28 million students. Continued support will enable NewSchools to invest in innovative school models and learning solutions, reimagine educator roles to address widespread staffing challenges, and share lessons learned with the education sector. This is a joint grant with the Public Understanding portfolio and will thus place a focus on family and community involvement in innovation.

In order to advance a vision in which all students are prepared with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need for postsecondary success, the New Designs portfolio supports the creation of innovative schools and programs that personalize student learning, as well as the capacity-building of adults and systems in support of these efforts. NewSchools Venture Fund (NSVF) is an important partner in advancing this work. Founded in 1998, NSVF has a strong reputation for sourcing, vetting, and supporting high-quality school models and educational technologies, as well as the educational leaders necessary to the success of those efforts. Since 2015, NSVF has supported over 100 new schools that will collectively serve 54,000 at full enrollment, and student performance at these schools represents an additional half-year of academic growth relative to comparable students in other schools. NSVF plays an important role as a thought leader and convener and contributes significantly to field-wide improvement through its research, learning, and knowledge-sharing activities.

Newschools Venture Fund’s (NSVF) Summit is an annual, invitation-only gathering that offers a diverse community of over 1,000 education practitioners, leaders, policymakers, and funders an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and share ideas about education innovation. The sessions and panels at Summit 2018 will feature content directly relevant to the Corporation’s program interests in school design, equity, civic education, and the future of work. As such, the Summit is an important opportunity for innovative thought leaders to network and collaborate around a range of pressing issues highly aligned to Corporation interests, and these discussions are a key way in which many issues and organizations gain greater exposure within the education community. With Corporation support of this year’s Summit, NSVF will organize engaging discussions around the education innovation that is necessary to prepare all students for success within the context of an evolving democracy and career landscape.

In order to realize a vision in which all students are prepared for postsecondary success, the New Designs portfolio supports innovative school models and new educational tools that personalize student learning experiences, as well as the capacity-building of adults and systems in support of these efforts. NewSchools Venture Fund (NSVF) is an important partner in advancing work in each of these areas. Founded in 1998, NSVF sources, vets, and invests in high-quality school models and educational technologies, as well as the educational leaders necessary to the success of those efforts. With Corporation support since 2015, NSVF has supported the planning and/or launch of seventy-four new schools, twenty school redesign efforts, six model providers, and seventy-three education technology ventures, in addition to playing an important thought leadership and convening role. With Corporation support, NSVF will develop and scale: new school models, educational technologies, and organizations led by diverse education leaders. NSVF will also undertake thought leadership, research, and learning activities in each of these areas.

As such, the Summit provides an important opportunity for attendees to unpack a range of pressing issues, and these discussions are an important way for many issues and organizations to gain greater exposure within the education community. This year, the Corporation’s support of the Summit will help the NewSchools Venture Fund team organize engaging discussions related to innovative school design and new opportunities for impact.

Advancing a vision of the classroom and school that promotes students’ intellectual and emotional development such that they are prepared for college and career success will require the development of new student-centered school models and investment in innovative tools and resources that enable personalized learning. NewSchools is a leader and catalyzing force in this work, helping shape the future of the field through its thought leadership and investments. With Corporation support, NewSchools will provide investment, management assistance, network building, and thought leadership in two priority areas aligned to the Corporation’s vision: 1) Innovative Schools, which works to both identify and sustain early stage innovative schools, and build capacity across the organizations that support them; and 2) Tools & Services, which invests in promising nonprofit entrepreneurs developing digital tools and services that support improved teaching and learning and increased personalization in PreK-12 schools. NSVF’s investment strategy is designed to find, fund, and support innovative solutions that will transform education to better prepare young people for future success.
