Description

The News Literacy Project (NLP) is the leading nonprofit advancing news literacy education for middle and high school students nationwide. With the bold goal of making news literacy a required part of K–12 learning—like math or English—NLP equips young people to identify credible sources, resist misinformation, and make informed decisions. NLP’s proven classroom tools—including the Checkology platform and The Sift newsletter—have reached over 17,000 educators and 1.5 million students since 2016, spanning more than one-third of U.S. public school districts. Through district fellowships, educator training, and state-level coalition building, NLP is helping to institutionalize news literacy education nationwide. Carnegie’s current project support grant has played a key role in advancing this work, particularly by supporting NLP’s District Fellowship program. A general support grant would further accelerate NLP’s capacity to expand its reach, scale high-impact programs, and support implementation in even more schools and states. With Carnegie’s investment, NLP will advance its goal of guaranteeing news literacy instruction for 3.5 million cumulative students by 2028.

Description

The News Literacy Project (NLP), a nonpartisan education nonprofit founded in 2008, aims to equip all students with news literacy skills before they graduate high school, fostering well-informed critical thinkers. Currently, such education is mandated in only nine states. With support from the Corporation, NLP will expand its District Fellowship program, a two-year initiative designed for district leaders to enhance news literacy education by incorporating news literacy activities into various school subjects. The fellowship builds a network of administrators, curriculum directors, and educators to develop and implement district-wide news and media literacy plans, ensuring replicable practices. The program, which has integrated news literacy into various subjects across eight states (CO, IA, MI, NM, NY, OR, PA, UT), will now include a third cohort of district fellows, adding nine new districts in CA, FL, NE, OK, and NC. This expansion will involve 37,228 educators and 960,891 students, doubling the program’s size to seventeen districts across thirteen states.

Description

In the digital age of unparalleled access to news and information, educators are trying to strengthen their students’ abilities to critically read and evaluate news and therefore serve as informed participants in a democracy. The News Literacy Project (NLP), a nonpartisan organization founded in 2008, works with educators and journalists to support middle school and high school students in sorting fact from fiction. Through its flagship NewsLitCamps, a full day of training for educators by journalists at a local newsroom, NLP has enabled over 200 teachers in Chicago Public Schools, New York City, and Miami to learn best practices in teaching their students about the news-gathering process, standards of quality journalism, and the importance of the First Amendment. With support from the Corporation, NLP will implement two NewsLitCamps, create a series of online initiatives, and develop multimedia resources for educators nationwide.
