Description
Although many harmful policies enacted under the previous presidential administration have been overturned, substantial changes to the country’s immigration system remain vital. Polarizing narratives around immigration combined with congressional gridlock and hesitancy from the Biden Administration to push for immigration reform have diminished some of the progress made by the pro-immigration movement. Founded in 1979, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) is a legal advocacy organization dedicated to defending and advancing the rights and opportunities of immigrants and their families. NILC has won landmark legal decisions protecting fundamental rights, defeated policies that would have negatively impacted the well-being of low-income immigrants and their family members, and advanced policies that reinforce the country’s values of equality, opportunity, and justice. With renewed Corporation support, NILC will continue to advocate for humane, commonsense policies that make it possible for immigrants to emerge from poverty, and also use legal advocacy and litigation strategies to defend fundamental due process and civil rights.

In recent years, immigrant communities have been made targets of discriminatory policies that preclude their full integration into the United States. This includes the federal government’s new “public charge” regulations, which may result in up to 47 percent of noncitizens being made ineligible for green cards for accessing public benefits for which they are eligible. The government is also significantly increasing fees for select immigration requests, making permanent immigration status inaccessible to immigrants with limited financial resources. Founded in 1979, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) is a legal advocacy organization dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of immigrants and their families. With Corporation support, NILC will continue to advocate for humane, commonsense policies that make it possible for immigrants to emerge from poverty and live with dignity, and also use litigation to defend the due process and civil rights of immigrants.

Description
In September 2018, the current Administration proposed new “public charge” guidelines for legal immigration, targeting low-income immigrants who are aiming to secure permanent status. Under these guidelines, immigrants who use public benefits may receive a “strongly weighted negative factor” on their applications for status adjustment. For context, approximately 50 percent of the 18 million children living in immigrant families, of whom 15.9 million were born in the United States, live below the poverty line. Since 1979, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) has been one of the leading legal advocacy organizations in the United States dedicated to defending and advancing the rights and opportunities of immigrants and their families. With renewed Corporation support, NILC will continue to advocate for humane, common sense policies that make it possible for immigrants to emerge from poverty and live with dignity, and use legal advocacy and litigation strategies to defend fundamental due process and civil rights.

Description
Poverty levels for immigrant children and families remain alarmingly high. U.S. Census Bureau statistics released in September 2015 indicate that 24 percent of non-citizens in the country live in poverty, compared with 14 percent of those who are native born. January 2016 research from the Migration Policy Institute reveals that the family incomes of three quarters of children with undocumented parents fall below 185 percent of the federal poverty level; this compares to 40 percent of all children in the U.S. who live in families within this income threshold. The National Immigration Law Center (NILC) is the primary legal advocacy organization in the United States exclusively dedicated to defending and advancing the rights and opportunities of low-income immigrants and their families. With renewed Corporation support, NILC will work on a range of issues that affect immigrant communities, including access to health care and economic supports; access to education and training; workers’ rights; and immigration policies that expand opportunities and minimize integration barriers.
