Project Title

For support of the Public Intellectuals Program

Date

Mar. 06, 2025

Duration

24 months

Description

As U.S.-China relations grow increasingly complex, experts who can provide nuanced and holistic analysis of China are essential. The National Committee on United States-China Relations’ (NCUSCR) Public Intellectuals Program (PIP) is designed to broaden emerging China specialists’ knowledge of China beyond their academic disciplines and prepare them to communicate effectively with non-academic audiences. Since 2005, NCUSCR has leveraged its relationships in China and the United States to help 160 PIP fellows develop extensive new networks in academia and the policymaking world. Renewed support will fund a two-year cohort of early- and mid-career PIP fellows to attend workshops and meetings with public and private sector leaders, media training, and study trips to China and other relevant Asian countries.

Description

As U.S.-China relations become increasingly complex, experts who can provide nuanced and precise analysis of China are more important than ever. The National Committee on United States-China Relations’ (NCUSCR) Public Intellectuals Program (PIP) was designed for emerging China specialists to deepen and broaden their knowledge of China beyond their academic disciplines and to equip them with the tools needed to share that knowledge with non-academic audiences. Renewed support will fund workshops and meetings with public and private sector leaders, media training, and study trips to Greater China (the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) for PIP fellows.

Duration

Description

Incentivized by the academy, American China scholars tend to focus on narrow sub-specialties and are deterred from engaging with other disciplines or the policy realm, especially in the pre-tenure stage of their careers. Even when scholars want to engage in public policy and share their knowledge with general audiences, they often lack the necessary skills and training. The National Committee on United States-China Relations’ (NCUSCR) Public Intellectuals Program (PIP) was designed for emerging China specialists to deepen and broaden their knowledge of China beyond the narrow focus of their academic disciplines. It also equips them with the tools and incentives for using that knowledge to inform American policy and broader public opinion. Renewed support will fund workshops and meetings with public and private sector leaders, media training, and study trips to Greater China for PIP fellows.

Project Title

As a one-time only grant for a survey of the China studies field in the United States

Date

Sep. 10, 2020

Duration

20 months

Description

In 2013, the International Peace and Security (IPS) program commissioned the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR) to conduct a needs assessment of China Studies programs at U.S. universities and think tanks. The findings of this study were later shared at a meeting convened at the Corporation with some twenty of the country’s foremost China experts. The recommendations from the study and the experts’ discussion provided the basis for IPS’s grantmaking focus on China within its Asian Security subprogram. Over the past seven years, much has occurred within the field of China Studies, reflecting broader changes in China and its relationship with the United States and the world. Given these changes, IPS will reengage with the NCUSCR to conduct a follow-on needs assessment. The study is designed to identify up and coming programs in China Studies and gaps in the field. The results of the study will be publicly available.

Description

For the most part, the American academy incentivizes China-focused scholars into narrow academic, sub-specialties and discourages involvement in the policy world. The result is that neither policymakers nor the general public benefit sufficiently from the deep knowledge and analytical skills of this academic community. Even those who want to play a greater role in shaping public policy and sharing their knowledge with general audiences typically do not know where or how to start, and often lack the necessary skills to do so. Through an established network of eminent China scholars and unique policy and cultural engagement, the National Committee on United States-China Relations’ (NCUSCR) Public Intellectuals Program (PIP) aims to deepen and broaden young China specialists’ knowledge of China beyond their academic disciplines and equip them with the tools to inform and help shape policy. With continued support, the program will expand the pool of specialists and their activities.

For support of the Public Intellectuals Program: a fellows program to create and strengthen ongoing links among academia, the policymaking world, and opinion leaders on China

Date

Sep. 08, 2016

Duration

27 months

Description

Established in 2005, the Public Intellectuals Program (PIP) of the National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) is designed to nurture outstanding members of the younger generation of U.S. China specialists from a variety of fields. It aims at deepening and broadening their knowledge of China beyond the narrow focus of their academic disciplines and equipping them with the tools and incentives to use that knowledge to inform American policy and public opinion. NCUSCR requests renewal support for a follow-on PIP round for twenty fellows. Each program component is tailored to meet PIP’s goals, and includes workshops and meetings with public and private sector leaders, media training, and study trips to Greater China. Periods of sustained interaction among the fellows enable them to become acquainted, learn about each other’s research, develop plans for collaborative work, and think about China through an interdisciplinary lens.
