Project Title

As a final core support of Springpoint

Date

Mar. 07, 2024

Duration

18 months

Description

The New Designs portfolio promotes innovative school models that personalize student learning and seeks to build knowledge about those new approaches. Springpoint, seeded over a decade ago as part of Carnegie Corporation’s Opportunity by Design initiative, partners with communities to transform student learning experiences so that they are personalized, mastery-based, student-driven, and integrate social-emotional development. Partnering with over 100 high schools and districts to date, Springpoint accomplishes its mission in part through its Transformative Learning Experiences (TLEs), rigorous, project-based curricular units focused on real-world problems and authentic learning experiences. TLEs are accompanied by implementation guidance designed to build educator capacity and reduce the time and energy educators need to create, use, and personalize project-based learning for their students. Support from the Corporation will allow Springpoint to gather data on current experiences of those using TLEs in order to measure the impact of the approach, which will in turn inform and improve model approach.

For core support of the Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration

Date

Sep. 15, 2022

Duration

24 months

Description

International, undocumented, and refugee students face unique obstacles to pursuing higher education, launching careers, and building stable lives. The obstacles include an outdated federal immigration system and an uneven patchwork of state policies and institutional practices that systematically limit their potential. Fiscally sponsored by the National Center for Civic Innovation, the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration is a national network of college and university leaders. It is dedicated to increasing public understanding of how immigration policies and practices affect students, campuses, and communities. With Corporation support, the Presidents’ Alliance will continue to educate policymakers about the importance of advancing immigration reforms that will improve educational and economic outcomes for immigrant students and the country overall.

Description

In 2017, an alliance of university presidents and chancellors assembled in response to government efforts to undermine the United States immigration system, including moves to restrict academic enrollment and postgraduate employment opportunities for immigrant, international, and refugee students. Fiscally sponsored by the National Center for Civic Innovation, the Presidents’Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration is a network of more than 500 university leaders, representing diverse institutions from across the country. The Presidents’Alliance is committed to ensuring greater educational access and equitable outcomes for immigrant and refugee students, as well as promoting policies that enable recruitment and retention of talented international students, alumni, and scholars. With Corporation support, the Presidents’Alliance will expand its immigration advocacy capabilities as it continues to amplify the voices of university leadership from across the country. It will also build out a digital portal that integrates data, policy updates, and resources affecting immigrant, international, and refugee students.

For a project to expand the OpenSciEd science curriculum into elementary and high school

Date

Dec. 10, 2020

Duration

Description

As the COVID-19 pandemic upends the 2020-21 school year, we must lower barriers to and advocate for schools’ meaningful alignment of science instruction to theFramework for K-12 Science Educationand the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Curricula must scaffold students to ask questions of phenomena, conduct investigations, analyze data, and develop explanations as they explore and learn. OpenSciEd is an initiative that brings together science leaders from ten states, expert curriculum developers, national science education leaders and classroom teachers to develop, distribute, and support a complete set of science instructional materials and associated professional learning resources. After a significant market analysis, there remains a need for NGSS-aligned materials in K-5 and high school. Through this project, OpenSciEd will: a) launch the development of; b) field test the units and materials of; and c) develop professional learning materials for a high school curriculum; as well as d) begin developing an elementary school curriculum.

OpenSciEd is a collaborative initiative that brings together states and curriculum developers, and national science education leaders and experts to create a complete set of robust, research-based, openly licensed K-12 science instructional materials, while building in tandem demand for these materials and supports for their implementation. The OpenSciEd Project will address several challenges currently facing science education in the United States, including designing exemplary research-based curricula to meet new standards and supporting high quality enactment that results in deeper learning outcomes for students. The partner states (CA, IA, LA, MA, MI, NM, NJ, OK, RI, WA) volunteered to join this effort, which is initially focusing on grades six through eight. Through this renewal grant, OpenSciEd will develop and field test six additional units of instruction.

Duration

Description

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) call for an approach to science teaching and learning that is more demanding, and very different from the approach common in classrooms today. The NGSS are different in structure and character from previous science standards, in their focus on the three dimensions of science learning, in their emphasis on student engagement with phenomena and design challenges, and in their connections to math, English language arts, and other disciplinary standards. Although more than half the U.S. student population is in states that have either adopted the NGSS or adopted new standards influenced by the NGSS, educational systems are generally unprepared to implement the NGSS, in that they lack the curriculum plans, the instructional materials, and the classroom assessments that the implementation of new standards requires. As a result, it is critical now to focus on the implementation of the NGSS, most notably building the supply of and demand for high quality instructional materials, and support for their implementation. The OpenSciEd project will bring together a group of states, curriculum developers, and many national and state science education leaders to create a complete set of robust, research-based, open-source, K-12 science instructional materials and implementation supports.
