The Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) engages audiences by celebrating, documenting, and interpreting the city’s past, present, and future through exhibitions, education programs, and community events. As part of New York City’s America250 celebrations, MCNY will present The Occupied City: New York and the American Revolution in 2026. The exhibition will challenge the notion that New York played a minor role in the Revolution, focusing on 1763–1789 and spotlighting the diverse individuals who shaped the city and the nation. With Corporation support, MCNY will develop related education programs—including field trips, professional development, and family offerings—that integrate American history and civics to help students understand their roles as citizens today. These efforts will extend beyond the exhibition’s run through ongoing civics-focused programming.

From its founding in 1923through today, the Museum of the City of New York has been dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of New York City. Utilizing the approximately 750,000 objects in its collection, the museum designs and provides special exhibitions, public programs and educational experiences that explore the past, present, and future of one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world. With Corporation support the Museum willexpand its community-based initiatives, as well as its virtual and in-person educational programming.

Description
Scholars and advocates have long recognized the value of the United States decennial census for providing insight into local identity and community-level needs. In anticipation of the 2020 Census, the Museum of the City of New York is partnering with local organizations and other city institutions to develop an exhibit that illustrates how a fair and accurate census can help people understand New York City and its complex socioeconomic ecosystems. In conjunction with the exhibit, the museum will provide educational programming on the history of the census, the various programs and projects it affects, and the impact that individual participation can have on the city. With Corporation support, the museum will curate a robust “data art” exhibit of New York City that demystifies and humanizes the census for students, educators, and the general public.

Founded in 1923, the Museum of the City of New York celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. Through exhibitions, school and public programs, publications, and collections, the museum engages the people of New York and visitors from around the world. In addition to its comprehensive permanent collection that details 400 years of New York’s history, each year the museum presents special exhibitions on a diverse range of topics, from women’s suffrage to the history of Chinatown. The museum’s Frederick A.O. Schwarz Education Center addresses the persistent, citywide challenge of student underachievement in social studies through educational programs such as the Saturday Academy, free American history and SAT prep courses for East and Central Harlem teens; New York City History Day, which engages 6th through 12th graders in the discovery and interpretation of historical topics; and New York City Tots, programs geared to children aged two through four that focus on exploration and discovery of the city through song, play, gallery visits, and hands-on experiences. With Corporation support, the museum will continue to develop new exhibits and expand its educational programming.
