Description
A lack of diversity among those influencing exhibitions and core museum programs inevitably limits the cultural sector’s ability to reflect the social needs and interests of the public it serves. Named after the Morgan’s first Director Belle da Costa Greene (1879-1950), one of the most prominent American librarians and cultural leaders of the first half of the twentieth century and a woman of African American descent, the Belle da Costa Greene Fellowshipsare the keystone of the Morgan’s multifaceted efforts to build a career pipeline for professionals from groups that have been historically underrepresented in the art world.A Carnegie Corporation renewal grantwould support two full-time, two-year Fellows who will help generate new interpretations of the Morgan’s collection.

Duration

Description
Studies confirm that people of color are heavily underrepresented in American art museums, particularly in curatorial, conservation, and leadership positions. A lack of diversity among those influencing exhibitions and core museum programs inevitably limits the cultural sector’s ability to reflect the social needs and interests of the public it serves. The Morgan Library & Museum has been developing a career pipeline for underrepresented scholars in art museum curatorship, rare-book librarianship, and arts leadership. With Corporation support, the Morgan will support paid fellowships for early-career curatorial professionals who will help generate new interpretations of the Morgan’s collection and also broaden perspectives in the larger cultural sector.

Duration

Description
Founded in 1906, The Morgan Library and Museum (The Morgan) houses more than 500,000 objects, including rare collections of manuscripts, books, drawings, photographs and ancient artifacts. The materials are available for research and for public viewing through various exhibitions and special programs. A recent evaluation of The Morgan’s K-12 program which, among other findings, highlighted the fact that the institution lacked on-line content for the purposes of curriculum development. As a result of these findings, The Morgan has implemented a five-year strategic plan for their education programming, which includes building on-line curriculum resources for teachers to broaden access and inclusivity. With Corporation support, The Morgan will create and develop an on-line repository of images, videos, and vocabulary to help teachers build lesson plans and other source materials around some of their more significant objects, which at one time could have only been seen by visiting the museum. These resources will be made available free of charge to content teachers across the United States.
