Date

Duration

Description
The significant increase in Latino student enrollment in U.S. schools, more than doubling since 1995 and predicted to reach 30 percent of the public-school population by 2030, highlights the urgent educational challenges and barriers this demographic faces, including lower college enrollment rates compared to their white peers and limited access to quality bilingual education. Latinos in Action (LIA) partners with public schools nationwide to improve Latino youth’s educational outcomes and social mobility through elective courses, which provide community leadership opportunities, college readiness services and scholarships. With the support of the Corporation, LIA plans to expand its program into five districts in Utah and Florida to at least 400 students by fostering their academic identities, readiness for college, and leadership skills. The “Carnegie Talento Scholarships” will provide crucial financial assistance to ten high school seniors, facilitating their pursuit of higher education and alleviating some of the financial challenges of college attendance.

Description
Latinos in Action (LIA) is an organization that addresses disparities in education and opportunities for Latino youth by working within the educational system. Since its launch in 2001, LIA has been at the forefront of bridging the graduation and opportunity gap for Latino students nationwide. They offer an elective course in high schools, empowering Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities, fostering ethnic, language, and academic identities, college readiness, and leadership development. LIA was recognized by the White House Initiative on Excellence in Hispanic Education as a Bright Spot for Hispanic Education. With funding from the Corporation’s RFP on family engagement to support student learning support, LIA piloted a new family engagement program component, engaging 70 families in weekly parent workshop sessions and implementing the “Padres Comprometidos” curriculum. With renewed support from the Corporation, LIA will expand their successful family engagement initiative into the Provo school district in Utah and launch it in Hillsborough, Florida.

In comparison to their non-Latino peers, Latinx students, who make up 20 percent of the country’s public-school population and are growing at a much faster rate andface significant barriers in education. For instance, they face language barriers andlack of economic and social resources. Moreover, Latinx parents, many of whom are immigrants, usually do not understand the U.S education system. Founded in 2001, Latinos in Action works from within the education system to create positive change for Latinx youth. They implement a suite of programs to empower Latinx students to achieve their full potential. With Corporation support through the request for proposals on family engagement to support student learning, Latinos in Action will address the barriers Latinx families face to supporting their children. Specifically, they will (a) provide workshops for parents to increase their capacity to play roles as advocates, supporters, mentors, encouragers, and monitors, (b) support educators to partner with Latinx families, and (c) engage families to share experiences and concerns with schools and build their leadership skills.
