Date

Jun. 06, 2024

Duration

15 months

Description

Founded in 1992, Koahnic Broadcast Corporation is a media organization that serves the Native American population. It was established by leaders of the Alaska Native community with the aim of safeguarding their culture and languages and to challenge pervasive biases toward Native people. The organization is headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska, from where it runs the public radio station KNBA, the inaugural Native American station to cater to urban regions, as well as The RIVR, a streaming station dedicated to youth. Additionally, it has a national production hub in Albuquerque, New Mexico, making it the leading producer of Native American content for the entire public radio network. With Corporation support, Koahnic Broadcast Corporation will carry out a nonpartisan media campaign to educate Native Americans nationally about barriers to their voting rights and to increase nonpartisan voter education and engagement.

Project Title

For support of a nonpartisan media campaign on Native American census participation and voter engagement

Date

Jun. 04, 2020

Duration

12 months

Description

Native Americans face significant legal, logistical, and cultural barriers to the United States’ core democratic institutions. They are the most undercounted of any ethnic group in the nation, which has resulted in inadequate political representation and federal funding for housing, healthcare, and public safety, among other items. Their participation in electoral politics is also severely stymied by discriminatory laws that reduce access to voting, including voter identification laws that require standard home addresses, which many voters on reservations do not have. Founded in 1992, Koahnic Broadcast Corporation (KBC) is a nonprofit Native American media production and distribution center that reaches more than 400 public radio stations and translators throughout North America. With Corporation support, KBC will create and distribute in-depth coverage about Native issues and voting, as well as promote nonpartisan messages encouraging participation in the 2020 Census and upcoming elections.

Project Title

For a nonpartisan Native American voter engagement radio campaign

Date

Sep. 08, 2016

Duration

24 months

Description

Native Americans and Alaska Natives have relatively low voter participation rates, due in part to barriers posed by language, distance, and access to information. Media has a vital role to play in supporting voter engagement, particularly for members of this group. Radio is an important media outlet for Native people, in part because of its relative low cost and its capacity to reach geographically isolated communities. With Corporation support, Koahnic Broadcast Corporation will produce and broadcast nonpartisan radio public service announcements and online information encouraging the Native population to vote; provide impartial journalistic coverage of issues concerning the 2016 elections and their impact on Native people; and provide training for journalists at public radio stations to build their capacity to report on election issues.
